if he got any louder, he'd limit silence to 0db.

i wish he'd get over it. it sounds terrible. compare the production of quaristice to that last thing he released.

but would his tracks be so much better if it weren't for the volume-overkill? i'd love to say it wouldn't but i digress .... listening to his work i must admit it would. damn

they would. unsurprisingly, my fav album of his is the first one, which is actually mastered properly. the whole loudness war thing has been discussed to death, but surely he must realise that his fanbase isn't 12 year old girls who listen to the music on little portable cd players. we know the diffference between something which is well produced and something which has just been compressed to fuck. maybe his later albums do have nice melodic structures or interesting harmonics, but we'll never know because it all just sounds like static.

agreed. but i'm sure he knows what he's doing. i'm afraid he just likes that overly fuck-up compressed sound. in which case:

it's because the volume dials on the equiptment he uses, the numbers all go to eleven. right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven...
which is one louder than everyone else.

I love Turning Dragon, but I agree, the compression does a big disservice to the music. I like aggressive beats and sounds, but with Clark it's more like sandpaper on the ears.
If his next CD will be ambient, I bet it'd still be mixed poorly.

I actually think the compression suits the latest album, because that's the sort of album it is.... There isn't a great deal of intricate programming going on. It's more of a techno thing, albeit not exactly minimal in approach. In fact I'd go as far as to say it's better than Quaristice and probably the best electronic release of the year.

quoting the quote of a quote
"The first picture shows 'Frau Wav from Body Riddle, from a Vinyl source'.
The second shows 'Frau Wav from the CD source after an idiot mastering engineer has hit it with a Waves L2/3 limiter.'
The third 'And, finally, this is a track from the new CD... Notice any difference from the original (non limited) vinyl body riddle example?'"

If that waveform screenshot is true then that kills me. But I'm torn in that the compression is very a much part of his "sound" as quoted (from what I can remember, but don't quote me on it) several interviews; so it would follow that he prefers the cd version(?).
I really appreciate his intense sound, but would love to hear some vinyl rips as I do own all or at least most of the cd's and mp3 exclusives.
Actually the mp3 exclusives sound like the cd's when the mp3s actually appear to have came directly from him.
Either way, I will say that over-compression/limiting kills so many quality productions.
Very much a conundrum in my opinion.

"best electronic release of the year" i agree with you. usually a year that has an Autechre release will automatically be my year's fave. but Clark did some really nice stuff on Dragon.
i disagree that the compression suits the album, though. a dynamic range of sound qualities in each track would have been more enjoyable.

a dynamic range would have been more enjoyable according to how you prefer your sound but perhaps not to the actual creator of the music.
then again if his vinyl really is dynamic like that... what the hell!
