imdb

i loved this movie - my favorite char was the mom. this is
one of those movies that you just cannot-not have a response
to. by the end of the movie i felt deep, oceanic moving
emotions.

Visitor Q is amazing, so is Imprint

they're also very different, in different genres (although
Visitor Q might be its own genre)

did you know that the film is loosely based on Pier Paolo
Pasolini's 1968 film, Teorema? True.

offline dariusgriffin from cool on 2008-10-03 15:30 [#02242206]

Teorema is kind of infinitely better but I need to see
Visitor Q again because I decided I didn't hate Miike in
fact I think he is great.

Miike is very hit and miss for me, Visitor Q has its moments
but I didn't find it massively satifying. I'm a big fan of
Gozu, Audition, The Happiness of the Katakuris, his segment
of Three Extremes and MPD Psycho. I'd recommend checking out
that series although everyone else I know who has tried to
watch it couldn't make it to the end.

Full Metal Yakuza, now that's a good film.

no no, it really is lovely. it's like spirited away with
needle torture.
i like that box thing he did for three extremes up to a
point, but im really sick of it now. too into itself for my
liking.

my top-5 favourite miike movies (i've seen maybe 25):

1) Izo
2) Happiness of the Katakuris
3) Big Bang Juvenile: 4.6 Billion Years of Love
4) Visitor Q
5) Fudoh: The New Generation

(they're all pretty good really)

visitor Q was awful though
and audition has one of the most psychic
turnaround shock i have ever seen in a movie...

i agree with indeksical
very hit and miss

but i have lots of respect

to me audition is quite cosy just because of the timing and
movement of the film. it developes slowly enough to let you
ease into the mood of the film, but just cuts short of being
too slow.

So what exactly is IMPRINT getting at then. I get the basics
but what's it about? Fill me in miike nerds!

i guess its just conflict then, yeah. i can see that now..
the whole movie is just this totally brain-sick, unsound
offense against all of reality , so i guess it would be
natural to have a defensive reaction to the movie. lol

it really bothered me. then the rest of the film got to me
even more. all the coldness (killing komomo, dad/monk raping
her, the baby's in the river) and the abandonment stuff. but
yeah that needle torture bit hurts. first she burns her,
then again (it's how slow it is that gets me), but then the
finger bit; i just kept thinking 'that's enough now,
really'' but it kept on going and going. i'm not sure what
it's about but the way it starts (opening scene with
abandoned cot in river) + the ending with him singing to a
bucket of aborted baby mess seems to be getting at something
very specific that i can't put my finger on. the whole thing
with his 'little sister' and her sister. WHAT IS IT ABOUT

it's pointing to his dark past... i have my theories, but I
can't prove anything specific.

yeah he obviously did something to his sister (there's some
kind of ownership thing with her probably in a sexual way).
but under this is something else. the woman with the twisted
face chooses him for a reason and it relates to her
story (wether true or otherwise). her story seems all tied
up with the curse of being born out of a sinful partenership
and her innocence being consistently betrayed or something.
the needle torture thing and the 'i waited and waited for
you christopher' thing goes in hand with his quest to save
and own an innocent/vunerable girl ('because she reminds me
of my little sister'). then the babys, a lot of that is
really emphasised thoughout. what is his story + the twisted
womans true/possibly fabricated story getting at when
combined with abandonment/spoiling of children? it's based
on a book isn't it? i should read it

yea, but i think you'll have to read Japanese...

by the way, did you know that the evil woman who tortures
the poor girl in that scene is actually the novelist in
question? This was revealed in the DVD extras. Check IMDB,
it's true. Disturbing! What a lady.

on the one hand you can say that simply just imagines the
most grotesque situations and images and throw them out
there, on another you can say the gross subjects are
connected somehow.

imprint was kind of like visitor Q in that there was a
emphasis on maternity... i dont know. i think it is just
about fucked up family abuse and fear.

I can't really recommend even one particular must-see movie
because I'd feel wrong about other movies which are good as
well. I like Your Top5 of Miike movies, very close to mine
(I also loved underrated Izo and I have even Katakuris on
DVD :D), though I haven't seen "Big Bang...". I assume
You've seen Gozu, Zeburaaman and others by Miike. I'll put
it this way: if I now had to choose two movies which I'd
like to watch again I'd choose Cure and Marebito. But
honestly if You're Asian cinema fan every movie from that
list is a must-see.
Cheers and have a good time watching! :)

Marebito is terrible. honestly. very faulty film.
get 2LDK, Tales of Terror (a massive collection of 5 minute
horror stories, love it) or VERSUS for rediculous low
budget fun (gets tedious tho).
i'm going to download Ebola Syndrome, it sounds great.
