Yo who bought dis
It looks alright and Yamaoka's music is still top notch, and I've found that not having loading screens every time you open a door is really swell.
However my expectiations for this game have been very measured. I just don't feel much of a need for another Silent Hill story. I pretty much bought this out of obligation, hoping for a pleasant surprise. Hopefully the game justifies its existence through a decent story and some cool settings. And I'm pretty sure the guy you are is the main character from Arrested Development.

Bonus observation- The textures are surprisingly assy in places, but it's so dark that it doesn't really matter I guess.

Also, you can strafe, and it does nothing to detract from the suspense and only helps the immersion that you're controlling a human being so fuck everybody that defends Resident Evil tank controls.

This game can't compare to those three masterpieces. But it's still pretty enjoyable and a step up from SH4.

Holy shit this game is hard, the enemies aren't shambling punching bags like the other games. I rarely make it through an encounter without needing a health drink afterwards. I can't remember the nurses posing any threat in any other Silent Hill game, but here they will corner you and you will die.
The combat in this game is almost like Punch Out or something, lots of ducking and weaving, carefully timing your shots, and closely watching the enemy give away when they're about to strike. And I fucking suck at it.

Here is my final, lonely verdict, for only I have played this game. Prove me wrong.
Gameplay wise, it's undoubtedly the best in the series. The level design flows better with fewer tedious segments than ever, and the enemies are more threatening. I don't remember the other games being as intense to play, or as well paced.
Story is unusually straightforward and unambitious, but pretty good, plenty of guilt to go around.
The game just doesn't have the holy shit factor though. The budget is low and it shows. Remember when you first played Silent Hill 2 in 2001? That was a moment, brother. This game is scarier, but lacks the intangibles. But I had a happy fun time.
SOME OF THE REVIEWS FOR THIS GAME ARE FUCKING DUMB, the IGN review in particular is total bullshit

I am buying this for my PC as soon as steam gets their shit together. Hmmm. Shit and steam seem to go pretty well in a sentence. I fucking hate that steaming pile of shit valve developed. But I digress.
I am a huge fan of silent hill. Anxiously waiting for steam to release it for PC.

someone somewhere wrote that the awkward controls in the first three games actually would add to the gameplay in a sense that you just don't want to fight because of the crappy fighting system. that was interesting and i agree.
this game is scarier you say, in which way? i'd think the tediousness would add much to the bleak athmosphere and go well with the stoic dialogues n stuff.. straightforward, unambitious story? ugh... like icecream without the cream?

Limited controls are a crutch, they added nothing except... awkward controls, which weren't fun. It was mostly a case of all-bark-and-no-bite in the other games. I never wanted to avoid combat because of the controls in the other games, but I did want to avoid combat in SH5... because of the character's slightly better self-defensive measures, the monsters have been tweaked to be more fierce to balance it out, and it is definitely more intense. It's the only SH game where I wondered if I might be doomed at one point. Awkward controls aren't good for anything if you can just walk all over the monsters anyway.
Although to be fair, SH5 got easier as it went along and I mastered the timing... the endgame is REALLY easy, and they practically shower you with healing items in the last 90 minutes or so.
And tedium and is never good, there's nothing in this game as boring or poorly designed as the subway from SH3. This game even has optional, very substantial quests that you can miss... I completely missed the rifle and an entire area. Even though that pissed me off, I deserved it for going right for my objective and skipping out on exploring... I wasn't expecting an SH game to have a big gameplay branch like that, they're usually more linear and rigidly designed. At least I have a reason to go back and play it again immediately.
But this is all gameplay related, the story and budget keeps this game from being as good as the first 3 games, overall. It's just a better designed game, with a sadly tiny budget behind it.

I do wonder, however, if it's even possible to do to this series what Capcom did to RE, and make it truly relevant and part of the vanguard again. If SH6 comes out and it's just like this, I'll buy it and enjoy it, but there's gotta be something else they can do. My head hurts when I think of it.

I am way behind on the silent hill series I still haven't played four yet. Again, this game sounds interesting but I fear it will ruin the whoile thing for me when it does. I am actually more interested in playing origins that homecoming as it's a prequel to the first game.
I think the first one was the best when it came to be scary as hell. Especially when you first enter the courtyard in the school with the demon babies. The first time I played the game I very nearly shit myself there.
The second one is the best for the psychological twistedness of it. Plus, the storyline is probably the best with some excellent supporting characters. The only downside is that the end boss is piss easy.
The third one is also great for the storyline. Continuing the story of the first game and also answering most of the questions I had after playing the first game. However, I agree some parts of this game were tedious. The subway station and the underpass were great on first playthrough but not so great. The saving grace for the underpass is the fact that it sometimes goes all bloody which freaked me out a little. This game also has a monster that I hate more than in any other game, the pendulums fucking irritating bastards they are. The prize for the hardest end boss goes for this game as well.
the soundtracks are also excellent but not so good on three. Mainly for fucking up the title song on the first game with vocals and lyrics.
Anyway, pointless analysis over. Just my two cents.

How do you think playing the fourth game will ''ruin it''? The game itself is messy, but I'd say it's well worth playing just for the story. It's a decent standalone story that references and adds to the Silent Hill mythos, and does it in a really subtle way. It's the worst SH but I never regretted playing it.
Re: Homecoming- I'm glad I played it before I played the much more awesome Dead Space.

I think it's fuckin excellent...I'm stuck on that cunty Scarlet (boss) at the moment, tho... I know you gotta break all the porcelain off her skin and use the axe, but my wrists are killing me from wailing on her.... I think guys have the upperhand in videogaming because of stronger wrists from years of masterbation.
Have you beat it yet? I'm guessing yes since you posted this last month.

Yeah, I beat it, and got the most anti-climactic ending in video game history. For the most part I liked the story, even though it had an unsatisfying conclusion for me... but I know there's a few endings, and the one I got isn't necessarily canon.
I find the knife in this game is beastly, it fucks up some bosses' shit. It can be tempting to use the big scary ranged weapons like that axe, but the knife in this game is the knife to end all knives.
