Apocalypto

Who cares that Mel Gibson directed it? I think it's
beautifully shot, has great atmospheric sound design, and it
supplies a nice dose of blood porn. Plus, I've always been
obsessed with the Aztecs and the Maya peoples, and while
it's not really a particularly historically accurate
portrayal of Maya civilization, it's the only film I've seen
that attempts to let you into that world.

I wish there was a whole genre dedicated to those two
different periods. Then there could be more Apocalyptos, but
without the boring second half chase sequence. I only really
liked the cruel slaughtering of Jaguar Paw's tribe, and the
brilliantly creepy religious fervor leading up to the human
sacrifice section. A lot of that for a few hours (in fact,
the temple section could have been twice as long for me),
with lots of gasping and weird droney soundtrack action
would have been wonderful.

Oh, and the latest National Geographic issue on the Mayans
was rubbish. :-(

I've had enough grape juice to give it a shot. I think me
singing through a wrongly-set up autotune with some world
percussion and Enya style oohs would do the trick. Do you
like evaporated milk? I used to like it with egg custard
tarts. But then I discovered that double cream was better
for me.

Peter Weller hosted a killer episode of Engineering an
Empire about the Mayans, I watched it last night. He went
deep into Pacal's tomb and came to this HUGE triangular
stone door that looked like it was from fucking Stargate or
something.
