Dopamine regulates muscle contractions. Impulses sent from the basal nuclei to the primary motor cortex by way of the prefrontal contrices are dampened by dopamine, which is produced by the substantia nigra. People who suffer from Parkinson's disease frequently have dysfunctional substantia nigra: Insuffient dopamine is produced. This is a reason for the application of dopamine agonists (such as L-dopa). Conversely, the presence of dopamine in excess may cause an unusual restriction of muscle contractions. |
