off the bat, a bit poo, unfortunately. some moments caught
my attention, vvhere i had to look at the name of the song
(planet gear). maybe it's a grovver. i'll see. i don't think
he's so crazy about it either, you can hear at the end.
obviously hastily put together.

Oh how the mechanical mind works. You can just imagine all
those Squarepusher post-IDM fans thinking, shit - how can I
still be cool when Squarepusher just did an album with real
drums and bass, and cheesy tunes.

Like the fools they are, they invest too much of their
personality and emotions in the music and persona. Then they
want it fixed, immoveable, to protect their little IDM box
and little IDM life.

Get real. Life is in perpertual motion. Sit still and you
rot. Thank god Jenkison hasn't rotted. Whether you like the
album or not is irrelevant, he has made the right album at
the right time for him, and done what all artists worth
their salt should do - diversify, think out of the box,
experiment.

If you want to remain stale, you have all his old albums to
listen to, so go listen to them - don't moan about change,
like some old war veteran.

you sure enjoy 'othering'. if that makes you feel better
about your own existence, that's cool then.

also, your assumptions are based on....nothing.

All assumptions are based on nothing. Just taking part in
your fantasy world.

i can assume something based on facts/experience.

offline Barcode from United Kingdom on 2008-10-13 07:50 [#02244961]

You're incapable of experiencing anything. Therefore, what
you think you are experiencing is not based on facts. All
assumptions are therefore meaningless.

What's wrong with othering? Altruism can only ever be a good
thing. All Barcode is doing is trying to free people from
their sealed little bubbles of existence.

Then again, I suppose the presentation, not the content of
what barcode said does appear to be a little righteous.

Yeah, I may well appear righteous. Typed text lacks
personality and so forces the reader to assume an identity
for me fabricated from their imagination. If they disagree
they assume I'm a wanker, if they agree I'm the second
coming. That's the Internet for you - a secondary-layer to
humankind's already massive illusion generator.

if i eat enough bad apples from a single tree, i think i can
safely assume that the tree will produce only bad apples.

and i don't think othering is wrong. othering can be good
when othered against something worthwhile.

it's poo but some people seem to think people should think
it's purty. i can't go farther than to call it purty poo.
and that's me being nice.

Pretty poo?

Still not really a proper opinion.

How do you mean pretty? It is pretty rough around the edges
and amateur sounding in my opinion...

It's fine that you don't like it. No one is having a go at
you for not liking it.

i wrote a long post for this thread like a week ago but my
internets crapped out right as i sent it so i lost the damn
post. here is a summary (mostly a response to barcode):

evolution requires two things: for things to change, and for
things that change into suck to die and things that change
into rock to thrive.

this album sucks.

.: it should die.

that is unless you're in the palin camp. ;)

on the fourth listen, i really like this album

There are still a few unnecessary tracks, but it "makes
sense" now. It has a long way to go to be up there with the
best of SP, but it stands on its own two feet, at least.

It really has some nice prog elements mixed in with funk and
cheese and jazzy interludes.

Whatever you guys think, people will still love Squarpusher.
He has achieved a massive ammount in his time- more than
most musicians and pushed the boundaries of music further
with every album. Just as Wiki says, he is rightly respected
for "his forward thinking approach to electronic music". I
know this thread has only been discussing one album, but
people have started attacking SP, so i just thiught would
try to redress the balance a bit.

obara is proof that people still like Just A Souvenir. That
means it is good to some.
