German speakers!

offline PORICK from fucking IRELAND on 2008-09-11 17:05 [#02236124]

Can I have your assistance please?

Is there anything wrong with the following sentence:

Der mutige Feuerwehrmann, der die Familie im brennenden Haus
auf der Straße in der Nähe von Alexanderplatz rettete,
verklagte die Stadt wegen schlechter Arbeitsbedingungen und
gewann.

I'm looking at especially the "im brennenden Haus auf der
Straße in der Nähe von Alexanderplatz" part...

Danke im voraus!

i found one mistake:
"in der Nähe !vom! Alexanderplatz"
also that part youre looking especially at
is a bit complicated. Maybe people would add commas
in there too like "...haus, auf der Straße, in der
Nähe..."

what do you need this for?
is this a trick to find germans on the board?
when will the voices in my head stop talking?

it's to do with a project i'm doing on nested relative
clauses in german.

I'd add commas there but it might interfere with the
comprehension of the sentence.. long story :)

thanks for the help!

If you can add 6 words (no more, no less) to this sentence,
without adding any more relative clauses or changing the
meaning too much, i'd be forever in your debt. been trying
to think of adjectives, etc, to add for a few hours now and
i'm coming up with nothing.

Ein Hund, dessen Fell von Flöhen befallen ist, die auch
für Menschen gefährlich sind, sollte sofort mit
Insektiziden behandelt werden.

an der Straße
aus dem Haus maybe

and i'm not sure with the past tense.... gerettet hatte...
there's also a lot of prepositions: im/an/vom, looks nicer
when it's less of them. everyone *loves* genitive, make it:
nahe des Alex.

der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod.

I should change it to "an der Straße" then? Is there any
difference in meaning?

I'd use the genitive there but I need to keep the word count
at 26 words :)

or even better: unweit des Alex.

the other one: sollte möglichst sofort

Menschen überaus gefährlich

..?

Der mutige Feuerwehrmann, der die Familie aus dem brennenden
Haus
an der Straße unweit des Alexanderplatz rettete,
verklagte die Stadt wegen schlechter Arbeitsbedingungen und
gewann letztendlich (or something).

"nested relative clauses in german."

Would it be too big a bother if I asked you to elaborate
slightly?

Stuff like this -

Die Wohnung in der exclusiven Umgebung, in der der alte
Henry Murphy, dessen streitlustige Frau ihn verachtete,
seine Musik aufnahm, ist der Ort seiner wöchentlichen
Cocktail-Party.

EN: The apartment in the exclusive area in which old
Henry Murphy whose belligerent wife despises him recorded
his music is the location of this week's cocktail-party

You can add commas in English in order to make it more
legible, but I left them out to stress the point.

Even in German, it can be very difficult to quickly
comprehend and interpret such sentences, so i'm testing the
correlation between the level of nesting and the rate and
quality of comprehension.

offline PORICK from fucking IRELAND on 2008-09-13 19:54 [#02236634]
Points: 1911 Status: Lurker

It also sometimes adds a deal of ambiguity to it..

In both the english and german versions of that sentence, it
is impossible to know whether Henry Murphy recorded his
music in the apartment where the cocktail party is
happening, or in the area in which this apartment is found.

As far as I know, Kafka did some fancy sentence work in
German.. at least, he has some pretty fancy sentences in the
Norwegian translations, but then Norwegian and German are
quite alike in many ways, so it's probably possible to
translate the entire structure of the sentence in a way that
you can't do when you're translating it to English. Der
Proceß and Die Verwandlung should contain such sentences.
The other books too, probably, but it's been a while since I
read them all...
