haven't come across this yet. surely that's only in folders
you've shared with friends?

I just use it for myself and my own files. Can you find me
and delete my files?

offline Brisk from selling smack at the orphanage on 2008-08-27 17:01 [#02232356]
Points: 4667 Status: Lurker | Followup to PORICK: #02232353

yep, if you access a shared folder from a friend, you
basically seem to have complete ownership rights on it. this
means, any files can be uploaded, deleted or otherwise
abused.

the fact it auto-downloads everything in the folder is what
killed it for me. files should only ever download if
executed remotely, or if you otherwise ask it to. i realise
they're going for the whole seemless approach, but it could
quickly lead to bandwidth saturation, for both client and
host.

i guess its good for public hosting of your own files as you
say, but i can always just use ftp for that.

a fine concept tho, just not for me.

auto-downloading is retarded, but the shared folder thing is
more like a "collaborative folder" idea

you have your own personal shared folder for files you want
to share, which can't be modified by others

It's really a nice program actually. You just need to use it
right. And use it for what it's intended. And like PORICK
already said, its idea is a collaborative folder.

I've got some subfolders in my dropbox folder which
correspond to some friends I'd like to share stuff with or
like to exchange stuff with. A shared folder has read/write
access for all partners which you can define on the website.
It's supposed to be like this and I don't see any problem at
all.

If I put a file into this folder, it gets uploaded to
dropbox and it gets auto-downloaded at my shared friends'
computers in the very same folder on their hard drive. Very
convenient, very easy.

And I also use it for some documents to have them in sync on
different locations/computers.

So Brisk, the problems you mention aren't really problems
but features! :) And you can ONLY read/write if the other
person has willingly shared a folder with you. So it's
secure enough. Unlike what you said.

offline Brisk from selling smack at the orphanage on 2008-08-28 07:58 [#02232478]
Points: 4667 Status: Lurker

collaborative folders are all well and good, until someone
gets drunk and calls the other person a cunt. then the
folder magically disappears.

oh and it still auto-downloads stuff. all it takes is some
idiot to drop a 4.3gb iso in the folder and everyone is
fucked, especially now that my isp has introduced traffic
shaping.

sorry, i'm still not convinced. nice try though.

I'm not sure how reliable this function is, but you should
be able to restore deleted files from the recent events
list. As for big files, they travel at drip speed. It's
been over ten hours since I dropped a 1gb file in my box and
it's still updating.
