how reliable are USB audio ints? i have never used one. just
for temporary use, and probably priced around 100-150

i have the usb audio Quattro. I used it for about 5 years
before the midi finally gave out. I still use it though for
the 1/4" ins/outs. It's pretty fast, I'd say. But it's old
so they probably have a newer better updated one?

i have firewire and i guess i recommend that though i can't
say why

if it doesn't work i read you're screwed because of their
customer service

all in all i still recommend m-audio

Depends on the PC, some USB IRQ's are shared with stupid
stuff which causes major audio drop out issues on some
laptops (eg. HP).

no sound comes out of the motu no matter what - and if its
anything its a really loud beep you can't adjust w/
volume...

If you can, then get firewire. I've got a terratc usb doodah
and it's alright, but can't do duplex 24/96 due to USB
bandwidth limitations (not really a problem for me).

Firewire has higher average datarate. Although peak is
480(?)Mbps for USB2 and 400Mbps for firewire400, this is
misleading because it is the average speed which is of
interest. Firewire uses a network topology, whereas USB acts
like the device is part of the computer. Firewire acts like
it is a seperate computer (sort of). USB uses much more
host CPU, but firewire uses other means to do the bulk of
the sums, freeing up you CPU :)

conclusion: firewire is better.
USB is good enough for me, but I only use 16bit/48kHz
duplex. My buffer sizes are pretty big and I'm not fussed
about latency. Since USB uses your CPU more, if you're doing
lots of CPU intensive stuff you may need to get a bigger
buffer =more latency.
If you have other USB bits attached, they can steal the
bandwidth also if your BIOS is badly configured it will
suffer, like sharing IRQs with other devices and fun things
like that.
I'm not any sort of pro audio specialist, but my friend is
and all the pro kit is firewire for audio/video. There is a
very good reason for this: it is better.

problem, fucking total suckage and depressing the shit out
of me.

I'm shocked to discover that a mac could suffer from any
problem at all. Steve jobs told me they are perfect, hence
the sooper dooper price...

sound on sound this month has some sort of audio card guide
or somehting. I don't buy it anymore but I flick through as
I bung up the isle in WHsmith desperately trying (and
failing) to find something worth buying.

it's just total and utter bullshit you know? it kills my
buzz, you want to get down and make some tunes and instead
you have to put your energy into fixing the shit. i got the
mac last year really cause theyre supposed to be the most
reliable for music and you dont have to fuck around with the
little bits but, for christs sake, i mean, a computer is a
computer. it's all electronic they all break. i'm thinking
about just getting a mother fucking 4-track , ditching the
computer and everything and just fucking rigging it you
know? i'm sick of this shit

inoperable

best decision I ever made was stop using the computer and
got a MPC. ok it can't do 100% of a track, but it does the
vital first 80% really well then do the last bit on a comp.
other way round you end up doing it backwards and get
nowhere.

modern computers do too many things. there is too much to go
wrong, too many lines of code, etc. sell the mac. they are
seriously overpriced for the sake of a fruity themed OS.

maybe look up the MPC 5000 or the roland MV8000 or what I
use, MPC1000 with JJOS. Just an idea, but it worked wonders
for me.

(plus no
usb/firewire/drivers/BlueScreenOfDeath/latency/aggro)

peronal experience, but from bad reviews. you might be good
with one of these babies LAZY_TITLE

they are actualy designed mackie, but under a different name
i think. it's bus powered too with the firewire

i think it's a cute little interface to use until you get
your motu fixed

can u rec audio w/ an affordable mpc? i thought they just
did midi

yes. its a midi seq and audio sampler.
typical workflow:
sample cds/vinyl/etc
trim samples,etc
make program
arrange sequence with internal programs and midi data for
external devices.

overview:
song(top)
.sequence
..tracks
...midi data (or notes to trigger internal sounds, etc)

programs and samples are easy. program is made of 1 or more
audio samples. each track has either a program (internal
sounds) or is pumped to a midi port to drive synths, etc (or
u can do both, i.e. trigger internal sounds and send midi).
layer up the tracks in a sequence, string sequences
toghether to make a song.

you have a "track mute" and "next sequence" screens so you
can do non-linear things or there is song mode, where you
stack up the sequences in the order you want them to play.
you can use the mpc as a standalone box. you can crank up
the rec.gain to use a mic directly (no phantom power
though). some models have a phono socket with RIAA
correction (for direct to record deck connection).

also it has internal fx (which are alright (not awful, not
great)) and you can record the main outputs so you can
sample itself (this is a BIG feature).

MPC 1000/2500, get the JJOS to double it's usefulness. MY 1k
is a great little box that gets ideas out of my brain better
than a computer.

chirst, what does it matter if it has too many outs, it's
not that you pay much extra for them. more ins is prolly
more expensive though

I reccomend this one:

Echo Audiofire

(They also have them with 8/8 and 12/12, + you can connect
them, so you can buy an ekstra 4/4 if you suddenly find
don't have enough I/O)

I also have the black macbook, and yeah, it's overrated, but
it's going to look very chic when i play live.
