anyone can be anything, with the right amount of patience
and practice. some people will always have natural ability
in creative fields and shine above the rest, but generally
most skills in life are gained simply through repetition
(and in the case of the artistic fields, a certain degree of
inspiration)

anyone can be a trained musician and a performer, but to be
a composer you need something else, something which is not
easy to be taught because ideas are such abstract things,
not everyone is gifted with a creative mind

I started a band once, and our drummer was deaf. Very cool
that she was a good drummer too.

So fuck yeah I think anyone can make music. It's people
discouraging others that stops most I think.

no, not anyone can be a musician.

like gingaling (thanks for being honest), if you don't have
a sense of rhythm or timing you never will.

no matter how many years you'll practice, it will never
sound 100% natural.

music comes out of your head, not your hands/feet.

so larn, i really wonder why you would say that.

is a person who splatters some paint on a canvas a painter,
and someone who bashes piano keys randomly a pianist?

of course, if you train a kid to play an instrument starting
at age 4 or whatever, chances are they will be able to play
impressively later on but am certain that some people can
simply never be taught no matter how much practice.

Depends on what you think that a musician is i guess...
anyone who outputs a certain composition of sound to express
an emotion or feeling is a musician, because he or she makes
music. So, with farting added to the list, really anyone is
a musician :P

How about chants ? Tribal gatherings ? New Age non drum rain
stick and thunderstorm music ? Rythem is an aspect of music,
but it's not always needed.

I can understand what some of you are saying, but I totally
don't agree with it. Anyone can make music.

I guess "what constitutes as music" is important for the
discussion. For me really anything that resembles an
intention to create a sound collection. Even then thats a
really stupid labeling but I really don't know what else to
call it. A group of sounds. If the artists has already
established some other work, then something as dodgy as a 1
second song, or 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence is still
music based on the fact that it is an intention to display
some sort of artistic idea to someone (an audience).

I only got 1 hour of sleep last night, and I'm hear at work
all foggy and yawning. Music to my ears would be "You can go
home and sleep! No stress, take the day off".

If you love it with a passion you can be a great musician.
If you're lazy and think it's a possible route to fame or
money, you'll fail miserably.
