wow that sucks. it was a great place to link to, even if
the person wasn't a member.

....it asked me for my login a few days ago when I just
wanted to see a normal page....

It doesn't worry me though, Discogs always "remembers me"
apart from when Firefox has a major crash and deletes
everything.

discogs has slowly "changed" a lot over the years and i'm
not sure if it's a good thing. the wiki system in particular
has been abused by some idiots... one guy even tried to
delete a release from the database because "he no longer has
the record".... what

the market place is good, but it has also meant the site has
become less of a public archive/database and more of a
business.

i know a lot of people are fed up with it and i think
alternatives are on the way. for me, it's still a daily
visit and an incredible amount of (normally) good content
though.

lost last.fm

I'm quite sure Discogs is still on the right track. Still no
ads, a great free API and very clean pages.

Compared to databases like IMDB, Discogs' a blessing.

"the market place is good, but it has also meant the site
has
become less of a public archive/database and more of a
business. "

But I bet they're smart enough to keep it more or less
separate. Every company needs a revenue source. Being able
to separate income from the free services is a great thing.
That way they avoid having to place ads or introduce
subscription stuff.
