Bo Hansson - Music Inspired by Lord of the Rings

Was digging through my dad's record collection, and found
this one from his college-dj days.

This is written on the back of the sleeve:

"A few years ago one began to hear from Scandinavia of a
brilliant organist
, BO HANSSON. He formed that
rarity, a rock duo, with a fellow Swede
, Janne Karlsson.
The two toured regularly from '67 through '69, and
released three albums, now something of collectors' pieces.
Few British musicians of the time were unaware of them
;
Jimi Hendrix not only jammed regularly with them, but
invited them to tour with his Experience.
Bo split to concentrate on writing. Professor Tolkien's
trilogy fascinated him, reached deep into his remote and
rather other-worldly nature. The music thus inspired was
recorded on a portable eight-track, in a rented house on an
island off Stockholm. It is very much Hansson's album: Apart
from the writing, he plays organ, guitar, Moog Synthesizer,
and bass. Helping are
Rune Carlsson (drums), Gunnar
Bergsten (saxophone), Sten Bergman (flute), and a few
anonymous 'friends'.

A quick look on discogs.com revealed that this was Hansson's
first album.

Are there any Hansson fans here? I'm enjoying this album
immensely. Unfortunately, the copy in my possession has been
played many times, so it pops fairly frequently, but I'm in
the process of ripping to my computer via USB turntable if
anyone's interested. If you might want to hear it, post here
and I'll upload it when it's ready.

I misread the discogs page, it wasn't his first album.
According to discogs, it was his second, not including the
three albums he apparently released as a rock duo from
'67-'69, which aren't listed.

Sorry for the poor audio quality. I'm considering getting a
better cartridge for this turntable, if I do I'll rip it
again and re-upload. Here it is for the meantime.

enjoy

My friend's dad had this, we used to listen to it all the
time as Hot Teens, I loved it, I played my taped copy of it
to death. Oddly enough I only recently aquired it again (via
p2p) to listen to again, and it's as fresh and funky as it
ever was. I put a couple of tracks in an "ambient" mix I was
doing in response to Darkpromenade's thread the other day,
but I never posted the mix. Sorry, I don't know what that's
got to do with anything. I remember freaking when I realised
that Mantegna's Christo Scorto was on the cover. Hey, art
students.

"Attic Thoughts" is the other album he had of his, but I
recall it being less impressive, but maybe I should seek it
out. I realise the version I've downloaded has an extra
track at the end "Early sketches from Middle Earth" which is
... like an Autechre style rehash of some of the album's
tracks. Ohhhh.

That "early sketches" track sounds awesome. Was it something
Bo himself did, or a tribute by another artist?

Oh no no, it's The Bo, sorry, it's just exactly what it says
in the title, just alternate versions of a couple of the
tracks not wildly dissimilar to the normal album version,
that's what I meant by saying Autechre and their Quaristice
reworks, it's not glitched up Bo with fucked up ambient
Hansson, though it's an idea.

Not that you were suggesting that anyway. God I've drunk too
much coffee and I feel really sick.

Back on topic. Bo Hansson! Needs a revival. Starting from

How kind of you to indulge a silly old fool. Why, if it
isn't up here at Ambient Drinkmats. I'm no mixer by no means,
though it's not so hard with AMBIENT. I tried to do a
tracklisting then got sad as some tracks I can't place and
that's a sign that my memory is going. Though I can tell you
there is Bo Hansson (...), The Advisory Cricle, in fact a
fair sprinkling of acts from the Ghost Box label, and .... a
lot of stuff you doubtless know already,

Hi again, would you be able to tell me the name of the track
which begins at roughly 31:50 in the mix? It's as though the
composer of that track sneaked into my brain to find out

lovely.

the paticular track you're after fortunately I do recall and
is "Through the tubes" by Miles Tilmann from the very good

I can't thank you enough, I need to get my hands on that
album.

Speaking of albums, I was able to find Bo's "Music Inspired
by Watership Down" in good condition. I'll need to get the
USB turntable (I only use for ripping vinyls to mp3 since I
have a better record player for listening) from the closet,
but I'd be happy to upload it as I did the other if you're
in need. I'll be ripping it at some point for my own mp3
collection, but I'll expedite the process if you're
interested.

Ok, well, I've got side A ripped and ready to go... but for
reasons unbeknownst to me, Side B is producing some serious
static.. I bought a cheap USB turntable, so it's probably
the turntable causing static buildup for some reason. The
strange thing is, this Bo album is the first one I've ripped
that has this problem. A quick google search revealed that
there are some other programs I can use to do the ripping,
which should, at least, reveal whether the problem is with
the software or the hardware. I'll try to get it working but
at worst, you'll be able to hear Side A. The static on Side
B is so bad that it makes that portion of the album hardly
listenable. :(

offline Zephyr Twin from ΔΔΔ on 2008-09-23 11:11 [#02239576]
Points: 16982 Status: Regular | Show recordbag

Using a new program, I've been able to get further along
Side B with no static, so I think it might just be working.
Should have the album uploaded within half an hour for those
who are interested.

Alright, I've got Side B ripped and converted to 320kbps
mp3, but the new program I'm using is so much better than
the old (more and better options, better 'preamp') that I've
decided to re-rip Side A so that both sides sound the same.

Thanks for being patient. :)

Bo Hansson - Music Inspired by Watership Down

I couldn't figure out the ID tag feature on the ripping
software, so here's a track list in case you want to listen
in chronological order:

(Side A)
1) Born of the Gentle South (16:21)
2) Allegro For a Rescue (1:18)

(Side B)
1) Legend and Light (3:42)
2) Trial and Adversity (4:05)
3) The Twice-Victory (8:07)
4) The Kingdom Brightly Smiles (1:20)

This album finds us a bit differently than the previous
"Music Inspired by..." album. It has more of a psychedelic
rock feel than its predecessor, but it definitely has that
Bo touch. I quite like it, and hopefully all of you will as
well!

I'm delighted that technology has given us the opportunity
to share old vinyl releases with one another on the net. My
one regret is that, according to discogs.com, there aren't
any other "Music Inspired by..." records to hunt down. Bo
has released other music I have yet to hear, so I've still
got something left to pine for. :p

*Bo ignorantly* i must say that checking out Music Inspired
by Lord of the Rings first make it easier to recognize to
feel of the artist in this second rip, i've been listening
to some italian psy rock with high level of originality so i
find this more like a departure from his original sound,
that makes more justice to the artist. however, i'm pretty
enjoying it and thanks again for sharing the wealth.

ps check this out if you have time

I'm glad you're enjoying it. You're right of course, this
album definitely stands on its own without being derivative
of the "...lord of the rings" album. I love the moody reggae
feel in some of the songs.

I'm actually glad that the software I had been using started
acting up and causing static, otherwise I would never have
found the program Amadeus which rips audio from vinyls much
cleaner and louder, not to mention gives me the option to
make them better quality MP3's than I could before. I might
have to re-rip the first one to see how much better it
sounds.

Thanks for the link to the Italian group. I'm downloading
the album as we speak and will check it out today. cheers!

Well, my copy of "...Lord of the Rings" has been played
countless times, so the vinyl itself is causing most of that
noise... I was just worried that the since I used the old
software for that album, that its volume level would be
really low. If I were to re-rip it, it would still have all
the clicks and pops, I think, it would just be louder and
have fuller tone. I think. :)

I found this while browsing eBay. It's one of Bo's
earliest albums, from his rock duo days with Janne Karlsson.
If the price wasn't exorbitant, I'd be inclined to bid. In
fact, I am dying to hear what it sounds like, I just can't
afford it. It does make paying $30 for a copy of his Attic
Thoughts LP seem more reasonable, though.

I guess you can't blame the seller for knowing what he/she
