:[my laptop totally crashed the other day. i've bough a new so thet's no problem, i needed an upgrade anyway. the problem is all the music and pics i hadn't backed up. i've taken the disc and put in an 2.5" cabinet an hooked it up to my ny lappy and tried to access data. no success. scanning it gives "MFT is fucked".. i've ended up formatting and then running getdataback for NTFS, which has worked before, but it doesn't find anything.. any advise maybe? i've tried some more soft/hardware-related forums as well without success.. you are my last hope.

Backup this time then... (look who's talking!!!)
My brother had a similar problem a few years ago... he gave the laptop to some professionals and got all the data back on a nice external 500 gig HD. So if you can afford to do the same...

you formatted the disc?!?!?!?
that's the last thing you want to do. sorry, but your data is pretty much irretrievable now.
if you hadn't formatted it, you could have brought it to a local computer shop. they generally have software/hardware which can get data off a pretty damaged disc. my local one charges 80 usd flat rate.

probably your boot sector good fucked which means that formatting or not formatting your data is gone anyway. the moment the mft goes down the disc just doesn't know anymore where every file is located and how much space it uses.
you can try to repair the mft with some freeware soft - just google around.
but the data is gone.

hey, as long as you don't overwrite the data it's not gone. i've restored about 99.5% of my stuff earlier, after a double-format.. first the computer was stolen, formatted with new password. then i formatted again and ran getdataback. simsalabim..
sadist: yes, i think that's the problem.. doesn't seem to be work with any conventional recovery software. "professionals" should be able to restore about anything though, so it should be possible. somehow.. but it costs from 800 dollars and up+++

dunno - my last harddrive is so fucked that it's physical ok but you can do absolutely nothing with it. i gave it to several companies and they told me it's absolutely down. so when it actually works that far for you maybe you have a better chance.

well im assuming you did quick formats then, because if you did a full format (the kind that takes somewhere between 20 minutes to an hour depending on the size of your hdd) all of the data on the harddrive is re-zeroed, and hence theres nothing left to recover. quick formats only tell the drive to not pay attention to the data present on the drive, which indeed leaves it still intact so long as you dont write anything new to the harddrive, which may or may not overwrite existing data.

There is no real difference between a quick format and a 'normal' format, except for a scan for bad sectors, which is why a full format takes so long. Most of the data can still be recovered.
Jesus. I thought this was a forum for geeks.
