DJing my first live set!

So I was originally slated to play just a 20 minute set
while bands are setting up and this all day concert at my
college (local/student bands mostly), as were a few other
djs, but they have all since bitched out and now im
basically playing house dj from 5 on! w00t!

this will be the first set i have really played for people
(i've pulled out my stuff at friends houses before, but
thats just mostly been drunk dicking around, not spinning a
proper set). it's still only 20 minute sets, but
nevertheless i'm stoked!

wishes me luck

Yeah, best of luck! Make sure to pack a fat wad of dip
before you go on stage, it'll give you the confidence you
need.

uh, no. but i've got spliffs to be rolled and a flask of
some cheap scotch.

how'd that work out for you anyway?

good luck pal. a good tip if you've not done anything before
might be to write a list of tunes you want to play ...and
take a shit load more with you 'just in case'.

it helps to have an idea of what you want to play. it's easy
to forget shit when your buzzing with your set/crowds
reaction (or when your nerves go!).

after a while it's easy to do stuff on the fly.

Still haven't gotten around to it. Last time I went to gas
station, I saw who was working the counter and decided not
to. Perhaps a pouch of TOP would suffice?

Just kidding. I don't care for nicotine rushes, really, I
don't. Was just going to be an impulse thing. Let us know
how it all works out for you, get'ur done!

yeah, i do have a pretty good idea of what im gonna play -
mostly the same kind of electro-house mashup stuff i've
posted here before. and one of the sets ive really prepared
ahead of time since i was originally just going to play
that, but the other few 20 min sets im not too worried about
- i've done enough spinning on the fly that i feel confident
in rocking what crowd will be there.

only a couple more hours! i'll prolly be headed up to campus
soon.

It'd better if you don't pretend to be a 'Superstar french
Dj', just set a mood for the bands that are playing. Play
some good music and calm down.

Dont get yourself drunk, that only messes things up...wait
for the crowd to get drunk, then you can loosen up and have
some real fun.

hallo people. so yeah, the sets happened and it went pretty
well, considering.

every other dj who was supposed to spin the event bitched
out at the last minute, so i ended up spinning four 20
minute sets, one each hour, from 5:40 until 9:00.

all in all i was pretty pleased. the first set i played
actually got a lot of attention from people who were around
- at least three pretty hot girls came up to me afterward
absolutely gushing about how awesome i am (totally a great
feeling). but as the day progress, people just weren't
around or something, because there was hardly anyone really
appearing to enjoy the music.

i was almost ready to not even bother playing my last set
(the one i had meticulously prepared for my original one
set) after being discouraged by the lack of interest during
the last two, but a few friends showed up to give me some
encouragement. by this time it was dark and my friend who
had organized the event had passed out glow sticks, and
people had been pushed towards the front of the stage for
the first time all day (there had been a space of about 20
feet between the stage and the audience throughout the rest
of the day).

the last one went down really well - it had a big opening
and i will be posting an extended version very soon.

also, i must say, it was a really great learning experience.
my friend who is the head of tech at my school looked at the
sound they had set up and was a bit discouraged, so we went
and hooked up the two 2400 watt subs to the system, and man
oh man, finally hearing myself play with a big system like
that was invigorating to say the least. i learned how much
different it is spinning in your room and keeping the energy
of a crowd up (biggest thing: no more long bass cuts!) even
though i only played for about 25 minutes at a time.

i'll be spinning a big graduation party at a mate's house
next thursday to celebrate the end of finals and i feel
exponentially more confident in my abilities now.

i've been djing (on my laptop mind you, this isn't
turntables, all in ableton) since the beginning of last
summer about, and have finally gotten to the point where i
have enough material and have practiced enough that i feel
comfortable playing live.

and i'll be posting a torrent of a re-edit of the last set
very soon, without the time constraints and the guys from
the band yelling at me that they are ready to play.

so the graduation party was last night and it was a total
blast! i started the night off with a bit of dubstep, then
worked in some justice, calvin harris, chromeo, vitalic -
lots of electro-funk. it was mostly a smaller group of
friends (around 15) but as the night got on more people
showed up, including a number who asked if i ever spin out
anywhere. i would have loved to have chatted with them more
but people have a tendency to want to talk during
particularly intricate transitions.

all in all, i started at 10:30 and kept going till about 1
am when a couple friends came over and told me i deserved to
take a break, which was entirely true. after that long of
constant djing, drinking, and smoking weed, my brain felt
like absolute mush. i kept seeing grids of tracks from
ableton everywhere and was speaking in half tongues ("dude,
that was completely blaaarrrwwl. fooo."). i couldn't have
imagine it being more fun though, having a crowd of people
really enjoying the music i was spinning for them, and
thanking me and i return thanking them. and considering this
is the third time i have djed live in the last few weeks, i
will hopefully be doing lots more soon :D
