i think it's excellent, maybe my favorite dopplereffekt. quite different from 'gesamtkunstwerk'. sounds similar to der zyklus' 'biometry', which isn't really a surprise i guess

Mirror Symmetry is my favourite track. The pads are great. So thick with incredibly slow evolution that creeps and creeps as theyre pushed back in the mix. It's so oppressive and unsettling like that time at your Nans funeral when you got felt up by your uncle behind the crematorium.

"utterly essential" like B. says but, really, its an ace record, just like any dopplereffekt release (my favorite might be the 2nd one on gigolo). cant wait for another full length from dataphysix.

I love it a lot, I find it's nicely complimented by that live set that was posted a month or so ago, well obviously as there's some of the material played in it, but I do like their moody take on electro/techno, quite a distinctive sound and atmosphere in the morass of The Same Old Same Old.

stinson seemed to always use 808's, where Gerald rarely did, or if he did he messed with the sounds alot

and it sems like stinson had a kind of formulaic melody/progression, i don't know what scale it would be, but if you listen to Under Sea Disturbances, and Sunrays, you can see that he uses a mellow style chord progression, i just don't know the musical theory behind it.

i dont know... i dont really think of orchestras while enjoying drexciya. anyway, from what i've heard james stinson seems to be influenced by prince & electronic funk from the 80s or even jazz. his trax seems more organic while dataphysix have a more "cold" sound, hypnotic, more loops & sometimes more abstract. & i'm not sure who did what on many releases, like some old der zyklus tune sounds like the other people place..

I doubt Kim Karli does anything in the albums, she used to provide vocals back them and she also helps in live performances, just listen to Gerald's solo work and Doppler I can't listen to any outside contribution.

It's the opposite, Stinson used the 909 most of the time while Gerald used the 606 and 808 exclusively. You're right about the chord progression being improvised and odd sounding at times, from interviews I've read he was into live recording, what you listen in the albums it's him playing live, I'm sure he programmed most stuff but he said he liked to record what he was feeling at the time living the moment, you can tell he was the mellow fella while Gerald was the cold one.

can you give an example of a 909 in any of Stinson's work? I haven't heard a single song with it, but i don't know everything so. I just remember reading an interview, in which he says he likes using 808s
Somewhere in here
Isn't the 909 the stuff that was used on a lot of Analord?

In Digital Tsunami my favorite release from Drexciya you can hear the punchy 909 all the way through! Stinson loved that drum-machine then again he was the one more into techno, Countdown Has Begun is another 909 track, in the EP Clarence g - Data Transfer it's the same track but without the vocals, I like this version much better.
As for Gerald now a days I have no idea what he uses, to be honest I preferred the 808 sd to the harsh lo-fi sounding snare drum he uses in all his tracks.
