Pendulum are utterly, completely, absolutely shite on more
levels than I dare to even imagine. They have bastardised a
once decent genre (jungle/dnb) and watered it down so that
indie snobs and part-time "electronica" fans (read:
prodigy/chem fans) can handle it.

I was looking on the Pendulum last.fm page and clicked the
profiles of some of the listeners on there. I love the fact
they can say shit like "this is drum n bass how it should
sound!" and have a top-artists list consisting of people
like Blink 182, Feeder, My Chemical Romance etc....

I hate Pendulum.

On behalf of australia I am deeply sorry about
pendulum...it's like admitting to your partner that you have
aids

what bastardized stands for? we're just sick of listening
dnb that's all, wait, no - we just keep on listening dnb
made more than 10 years ago cos we have some memories linked
to it, and cos it was fresh. that album, Timeless was named
that way not by accident. without big sales albums or mtv
videos we wouldn't have discovered dnb, unsless one is the
king of the underground, and i would say that now it has way
more standards than in the 90s, it has refined, it's more
pure than bastard. i don't like pendulum, but i don't mind
them to spread the genre outside my world.

If you seriously think that dnb today is better than it was
back in 93-95, then I worry about you sir. I used to think
Aphrodite was king of the wanky jungle formula, but even he
has 100x more skill than Pendulum.

Mass media had nothing to do with jungle in the first place.
It always was an underground genre. MTV and the myriad of
other crap journals like NME do as they always have - see a
promising new style of music, proclaim it the best thing
ever, then idiots who couldn't run a successful rock band
get a hold of it and filter out everything that made it good
in the first place.

I look back at albums like Timeless, Black Secret
Technology, Modus Operandi, Remarcs Unreleased Dubs etc...
they still have 100x more ideas than anything Pendulum could
make. That isn't to say all dnb is bad these days. I love
Fanu and Martyns releases. But still, the genre as a whole
is pretty tired unfortunately.

thats a good point of view, thanks for the explanation.
still i believe that mass media serves as vehicle for the
people to know that something is happening in some part of
the word, be it good or not - the underground wouldn't exist
without a mainstream where the underground legend is told.
its too bad listening to pendulum music, but imagine a folk
in the other side of the world that doesn't know wtf dnb is
and saying hey i like these drums. the fact that mtv now
plays pendulum instead of fanu is for the money for sure,
because they know many people WILL like it. hopefully some
of them won't buy pendulum's album but connect to the
internet and discover fanu, that's why i think it's not that
bad.

Sure. I have no problem with artists getting decent
promotion, especially if it gives good coverage of what the
scene/genre is about. The internet is both a gift and a
curse for the average producer funnily enough - it gives
them much more opportunity for their music to be heard, but
they're competiting with every other producer out there
struggling for their piece of the internet pie. It kind of
reaches a saturation point.

My main problem is when mediocre artists like Pendulum get
popular with the masses and are then namechecked as THE
sound of dnb when in reality, infinitely more definitive
music from the genre was made 10 years previous by artists
who get about 1/100th of the medias attention. It is
basically a slap in the face for the people who carved the
sound in the first place.

no i don't think it's a slap in the face, on the contrary it
legitimates what they were doing cos it was really
good, and make the people appreciate their work way more,
perhaps more now than 10 years ago. pendulum et al be useful
to make one curious and go deep into something.. the music
it's not about the money you make nor the attention you get,
and i think the old skool producer might not be a superstar
but for sure they have a special place into a few people
hearts. ain't that true undergound?

One or two pendulum tracks are alright. I've been out in a
"normal" friday night dancefloor and they drop a pendulum
track instead of some gay hip hop rnb shizzle and they place
seems much more energetic and fun.

However if you listen to it side by side with say, the
Torque album you realise how shite it really is.

So in conclusion, it seems good compared to wanky dancefloor
musics but it seems crap compared to decent drum and bass.
If it's classed as pop music then I've heard much worse pop
music. So I dunno.

Pendulum will never be as good as this:

I have no problem with it whatsoever. Good stuff. He doesn't
have a million different ideas, but he's refined his style
pretty slick. There's a level of pop perfection on this new
track as well.

now play with a full band - live guitar, bass, synth, even
drums! fucking epic is all ive heard from people.
