Avast! rocks...
Get Avast! Hom Edition for free... has full 6 module scanning (On Access, Mail, etc etc) and it updates automatically.

I'm trying out Avira too. It has heuristic scanning, meaning it tries to detect viruses and trojans on the basis of their suspicious behaviour, not just whether they match a preset signature.
