PMW were devastated to hear the announcement by Darrel
Fitton / BOLA that he was retiring from the music business.
We have left this profile and sampler on-line for posterity,
and highly recommend that any interested parties purchase
all the releases mentioned below, as well as his final
masterwork KROUNGRINE.

--------------------------------

He's my favourite after autechre :(

That is indeed a real shame. He is one of my favourite
musicians too and although I do think the quality of his
albums has been slowly on the decline since Voile, he has
produced some absolutely timeless music over the years. Soup
and Fyuti are still incredible.

Maybe he is just retiring the Bola name. We still need a
autechre/gescom + fitton colaboration to happen!

that's beat. he's up there as one of my favorites, but
really just his first two albums.

it's from november of last year. odd that skam didn't
announce it, so perhaps he won't be gone completely. could
contribute to gescom and/or do mastering for skam artists.

thats fucking terrible.
i like really all of his albums.. but soup is the album that
really stands highest for me.
i had many nights playing a shadowrun mud to that album, its
forever etched into my brain as the perfect shadowrun
album.

gnayse is my second favorite. it really is an amazing album
as well.

i wonder why he decided to do this though, but either way i
wish him well, and he should know his music is timeless to
me and an eternal favorite.

goddamnit though

Nah, it's probably more complex than that, but free
downloading doesn't help and hasn't helped smaller labels
like Skam.

I might as well add, before someone bites my nob off, that
much of Skam's back catalogue was hard to get, and i
understand people who missed out to want to download stuff
they didn't manage to buy. Now you can Buy them in MP3 form.
I also think many big names aren't harmed as much by
downloading. I download stuff on slsk too.

I just think it's bad for certain artists, like Bola. How
many people downloaded his latest album? Loads i'm sure.
These guys have families and rents to pay. Food on the
table. I don't think that you can be as good and productive
when you have a full time job on the side. I'm sure we'd all
rather some of our fave artists had nothing but music to do,
no other obligations (well apart from looking after your
family of course)

It surely doesn't help that he rarely played live either.

Playing live is where the money is at these days if you are
a musician.

Yeah absolutely.

I never got to seem him play live, had a few occasions. It
was a real shame he couldn't play at Ae's ATP.(he had a
perfectly good reason though)

i'm all for the idea of free music. When bakers and lawyers
will work for free, then yes, maybe the concept that all
music should be free will work.

Not to worry... Anyway to stop this confusion. Yes, I do
play out. I did so on friday. Unfortunately for me nobody
really knows who I am so I getting money for it is out of
the question. I am just happy to be playing somewhere.

bola hype2008, maybe, look for a triple albumin 2009...

as for free d/l, it helps people get into bands, but people
arnt buying why they used to either.....

RIP is its a true Bola statement, :(

i don't buy it!
how do you 'quit' writing music! i don't get it. even if you
DO have a day job, the thought of being able to make
physical releases on Skam would be mad awesome! and not only
that, you make music because you have to!

im not saying that bola is quitting due to fanancial
reasons, i just think that he might take a break, and then
that desire will re-amerge....

i love bola too much for him to quit... own nearly all of
his records, and i fucking adore kroungrine and gnayse...

was just cranking the shit out of Urenforpuren... what a
fucking track!

fuck.

yeah, you're right. it does seem weird to be so definite
about it. also, brisk suggested he might just be retiring
the bola name, but the announcement seems to be that darrel
is retiring (not bola...)

Teapot: I still hope we'll see more Bola. I can't see him
never making music again. Things just aren't as easy as you
all seem to think.

I guess it's funnier for artists like Bola and Arovane to
put out records when they are in their 20s selling
5.000-10.000 copies, than when they are 35, selling almost
nothing. But I guess they never started to make music
because of the money, so it's strange that they retire
completely. At least put out some limited vinyl ep's now and
then for fudges sake!

i dont get it really..
it may sound naive but it should never be about the money.
i dont think it was for bola, but i cant know for certain.

it should be about wanting to create something and share it
so others can enjoy it, and fulfill personal goals in the
meantime.

if he felt he didnt have anything to offer anymore then
fine, but thats weird too.

hes been consistently brilliant through most of his
creations, it doesnt make any sense to stop now.. :p

this is some sad fucking news.

i came into this thread hoping to learn about some
forthcoming ep or some other good news about bola. this is
kind of a shocker. waiting for the next bola material was
similar to waiting for the next ae output.

his music production will seriously be missed :(
