You wake up, put on the coffee, and get ready for work.
Then, just as you’re reaching for the cell phone, you
remember that today is the beginning of Mental Detox Week.
Today you’re not going to listen to your iPod. You
aren’t going to stare at a computer screen any more than
you absolutely have to. Today you won’t worry about
unanswered email, and you’re not going to login to
Facebook. You’ll cut the time you spend on digital devices
right down to the bone.
In the evening maybe you will watch your favorite TV show
for an hour, but after that you switch off, have a
conversation, wash the dishes, read for a bit, and just
relax. You do that for five days, and then on Friday night
you make a decision to unplug completely for the whole
weekend.
For a couple of days you might feel like an addict in
withdrawal: peevish, agitated, and distracted. But then
something will happen. Your over-stimulated brain will
cleanse itself. You’ll relax. You’ll feel calmer, more
grounded.

unplug

i will try this from monday till friday, not till sunday.
but i will not switch on the tv once, listen to NO music at
all, and check for important missed calls on my cell only
once a day.

i'll be reading this book, which is good fun and heartily
recommended:

how to be free

i hope the weather will be nice.

Interesting idea, don't know if I could survive without
music though... Thanks for the tip about the Tom Hodgkinson
book!

from the ancient greek times of hyeronimus or something? i
don't think about it a lot, but thanks for the reminder.

avart:

the non music thing is going to be horrible. but i notice i
listen to music without paying proper attention, just
becuase i'm so used to it. like i always have my mp3 player
on random and it has simply killed my attention span. Gone
are the days when i could just listen to an album from start
to finish, and this problem occurs with reading books as
well.

i'm not expecting all this to change instantly, but i need
to get away from the idea that i'll most likely be bored to
tears without internet and music. time to find a balance
(cheers brisk).

if you want to appriciate music, by a record deck. i'm not
talking about the fidelity etc.. i find if i put a record
on, i treat it as an event rather than something incidental.
i'm glad i dont use my ipod anymore. like you it destroyed
my attention span to the point i wouldnt even listen to full
tracks.

interesting idea, but with being a media designer and all,
closing myself out of the digital world for 5 days will
result me in dropping out of college

i have one on my wishlist but it seems too much of a luxury
when i have so much equipment already, plus buying vinyl
might turn into a neverending addiction, like i have with
dvds.

but i can totally understand where you're coming from. just
seeing vinyl spin on a deck can be mesmerizing to watch so
yes, i would love to have one.

agreed 100%

it is the difference between hearing music and listening to
it.
