Getting ready to leave now. Staying overnight with the wife for our 6 yr anniversary tomorrow.
I hate driving in DC it is a nightmare. Last time I went we were seeing Christoph Heeman & one guy from Beequeen at sonic circuits experimental festival. Heeman didnt go on until 200 am and then it took about 2 hrs to find our way out of the city.
hopefully this will go smooth staying overnight and not leaving right after should help.
will post a review after.

What a ridiculous set. Dark, fast and hard hitting just as I expected! Wasn't crazy about Massonix. When he just hammered beats out on the laptop it was nice but I wasn't feeling the live instrumentation from him. Rob Hall awesome as always, especially his second set before Ae came up. Rob slapped out a track from Speedy J 'A shocking hobby' right before Ae and it got people pumped up. Then Ae comes on fuckin a their live set keeps getting better and better. Heard tidbits of Quaristice in there but on a 4/4 beat. I don't think I've ever heard Sean and Rob push the bpm limit as fast as they did last night.
I saw Rob Brown come out to get a drink at bar just before Massonix came on but I was so fucking wasted I tapped him on the shoulder and said "Hey what's going on Sean?" Before I could go tell him sorry got his name wrong it was too late. lol. Oh well. As other people have said I was a little disappointed in the crowd support, I was one of the few people cheering and and there was only a handful dancing with a few retarded glow stick ravers but overall and incredible night. Hopefully its not another 3 years I have to wait to see them again!

Amazing set. sorry didnt get on in time to read the descriptions. I was at the right side bar closest to the AE shirt stand with 4 friends 1 including Catalyst. I kept walking around looking for women to grind with. I found 1 just before AE went on. so it was a great night. she was darker skinned but not black, maybe persian or some sort of beautiful ethnicity (was really dark). my move you ask?- I kept pushing a guy around who was dancing into her. hell yea kept him in check and won a smile. hoo rah.

we didnt really get to grind tho, I couldnt tell ffor the 1st half if her bf was behind her. she kept looking over at me though and then got directly in front of me ;)..
for some reason a beautiful girl at a show can make the show 10 fold better. I hate being crammed in with nothing but fatties and other dudes next to me. even with no touchie its more entertaining.

Make one.
I wrote about my convo afterwards with the soundguy over at watmm.
Oh, and I shouted "Tusssssssssss" when Rob Hall started his second set and "Soundbooooooooooooooooooooard" right before Autechre started.
You probably heard me.

So for me Rob Hall took the show.
It goes Rob Hall 4.5/5 Autechre 3.9/5 Massonix 3.0/5
Massonix had some decent stuff going on here and there. He had his moments, anyway. I agree some of the instrumentation was shotty and there were some moves that weren't so tight. I thought it was cool that he brought the sax now if only he played it like neils van hornblower or whatever his name is. He did have the most diverse range of things he tried to do out of the 3, so ill give him that.
Autechre's set was decent, but the last time I saw them was for Confield and I think that was the better set out of the 2. The drum patterns got a little loopy and any tonal or melodic elements seemed ancillary to the percussive parts. It drifted a tad into wank territory for me, too and felt a little hang out jam.
Rob Hall was the best. All his transitions were tight and the beats, tones, samples etc were just abstract enough but still got your head nodding. He didn't reinvent the wheel, but for what he was doing it was 100% solid.

i guess i should say some good things about ae. the sound was dense and it was hard. it was fast and driving at parts like untilted, and hard the minimal tonal qualities of tracks like zeiss contarex or sim gishel.

pretty surprised at your comments about 'wank out jam' when to my ears most of this sounded very deliberately composed especially compared to the Confield tour which was literally them hitting play on several generative max/msp patches based on the one floating around on the internet called 'ae_fun'
but i could see if you were expecting something more inventive or crazy you would be disappointed. This in some ways is more mainstream and more traditionally 'dance' than anything AE has ever done, id even argue more so than incunabula or amber.

they did get loopy, but i welcomed it, it worked very well for the context of the set.
To me AE has reinvented what electronic dance should sound like. their live set was significantly more interesting to me than the Quaristice LP.
it was in a similar league to the 2005 set they played out, but this was like taking it to the next level of goodness

i thought honestly the most boring part of their set was the opening 4-5 minutes, that was where most of the repetition was, at least not very much noticeable change going on, the loopiness later was broken up with a enough changes to keep me very entertained

I didn't enjoy Rob Hall at all. I thought his first set especially was pretty boring. The second set picked up a little, but still was kind of boring to me.
I don't understand what the problem with "loopy" is in the context of a live performance. It is supposed to be about energy. (something that 95%of the crowd did not understand) The loops and the power drive the energy.
But Jack, it was not as composed as you and I initially speculated about. I enjoyed the first however long of the hip hop style loop. My favorite parts were the breakdowns, IO, and the last ten minutes or so.

yea and it is going to wear my energy down if i most of the hits in a pattern are hitting exactly the same way as they were several minutes ago. i guess i am just particularly sensitive to that.
now on tri rep or untilted i agree that the use of slowly evolving loops works. with this set, man i just dont know why it was different. it was just ok for me with wherever i was at that night. i say that because i know i can be fickle with what i like depending on my mood, so..
if anyone has an mp3 of their set id love to give it another listen.

hi rook and im still more or less not convinced they 'improvise' anything on this tour, im sure they improve on little bits here and there and make changes to the 'song mode' template on their elektrons. but some of the performances are just too blatantly similar even down to the seconds (of when transitions occour) to make me think what you are hearing is anything more than just subtle additions done in between live sets on certain gigs.
