Just received mine! Haven't played it yet, but I suppose the
sides with more than 1 track are 33 RPM and the sides with a
single track 45 RPM? But then again, it doesn't really
matter that much, I'll just play it at the speed most
comfortable to me :)

4: 33 rpm
5 & 6: 45 rpm

(if I remember it correctly - in all 17 tracks - based on
the where the pauses in the music is - and 1h 7m 11s running
time)

woah, apparently on one of the two major torrent mp3 sites
they are being hosted.

yes it is a fantastic release, buit i must say this is a lot
harder on the psyche and much glitcher than anything they've
ever done. One song is like a 2 minute long stutter fest
rivaling anything ive heard by autechre as far as
unlistenability goes.
There are a lot more 'harder' sounds as well, like i hear
full on 909 bass drums and snares in this, no clicks and
cuts at all happening no typical alvo noto type sound this
is just weird time signatures crazy glitching patters with
full on drum sounds.

snd's first releases are among the best records I got - but
I don't like 4, 5, 6 at all, it's just another example of a
record I shouldn't have bought.

there's no groove/flow anywhere, just beat repeat and
stutter all over the place. retrigs are such a worn out and
tired fx now, next trick p l e a s e...

"retrigs are such a worn out and tired fx now, next trick p
l e a s e... "

if you're looking for superficial tricks and novelty, you're
not likely to find any lasting satisfaction. musics more
than one big list of effects. not that they use beat
repeat.

"there's no groove/flow anywhere"

i think there's loads of repetition/groove. Fairplay, its
all opinions tho.

"musics more than - - - effects"

yeah, and I like music that sounds more than just tired
effects

(and of course it's not beat repeat, it's surely some
max/msp patch - I guess note repeat on the mpc can't be
pushed to these more extreme retrigs - but it doesn't matter
- IMHO retrigs are so overdone and boring...)

you people are making a big mistake if you are just
listening to the effects or whatever. Listen to it again and
concentrate on the swells and let the percussion glaze over
you instead of vice versa.

Seriously, most people need listening lessons these days.

i'm really enjoying this on first listens. there's some
untilted-quaristice influences in there for sure.

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2008-04-29 14:04 [#02199356]
Points: 1038 Status: Lurker

not really getting the quaristice influences, but yeah i
guess i can see the programming being reminiscent of
untilted.
i really like listening to this album in 331/3 rpm the whole
way through, the leak in mp3 form i found was recorded in
45rpm and even if thats how the album is supposed to play i
dont think it sounds nearly as nice as it does when played
much slower. it honestly sounds more like a proper SND album
when played at 331/3rd rpm. Rook was saying that possibly
only '4' is intended at 33 1/3rd but that the rest are 45rpm

mm, I'm too are pretty convinced that 33 rpm is valid for
two of the discs and 45 for one - but now "kerouac78" states
that mark fell of snd says that all discs are to be played
at 45 rpm....

whateva - "everyday" by afx still sounds best at 33 rpm,
too... :)

offline Rook from United States on 2008-04-29 15:31 [#02199400]
Points: 179 Status: Lurker

A guy on Watmm just said he emailed Mark Fell who said that
all three discs are to be played at 45 bpm.

Still, that doesn't stop us from playing them at 33 for our
own enjoyment...

But yea, doesn't sound like Quaristice in the slightest.

This record is the complete opposite of Autechre to me.
While AE, I feel, is best listened to by concentrating on
the details, and seeing how the details fit into the whole.
SND however, I think is better listened to by not
concentrating on the details, but instead letting the
retrigs, percussion, and especially the swells flow over
you. Very exciting. Almost ambient in a way that it tends to
an almost removed listening. Removed but not removed. Best
not to concentrate to individual parts on this record.

maybe i'm way off, but didnt they open for ae on the
untilted tour? the quaristice material comes from that tour,
doesn't it?

i'm not saying that they sound exactly like ae, rather that
their sound reminds me of their two last albums. i listened
to 456 and then went back to cassette and tender love. it
really hit me how their 'clicks & cuts" sound changed since
then. to me, the song structures on 456 are closer to
untilted/quaristice than their own previous work.

but again, maybe i'm the only one hearing that imaginary
influence.

"the quaristice material comes from that tour,
doesn't it? "

not exactly, only little bits of it here and there made it
on the quaristice LP and those bits that did appear (chenc
9, IO) sound absolutely nothing like SNDs work.

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2008-04-30 12:41 [#02199870]

im going out on a limb here to say that at least disc '4'
sounds infinitely better played at 33 1/3rd rpm vs 45 rpm.
try it yourself

i'd be more inclined to say that autechre have been
influenced by snd than the other way around...

yeah, as read on this very site, mark fell likes to
dissapoint people, so he surely likes to fool people who

The only thing quaristice is influenced is your ability to
listen.
"Quaristice this and quaristice that"...you pussy, this is a
