very basic laptop dj question

I've downloaded a virtual dj software, I think its called
Atomix or something. I think I downloaded Traktor as well
but I haven't looked at it yet. I have very little knowlege
of dj-ing and am not massively computer savvy, I just wanna
be able to mix tunes for house parties and stuff.
But basically my problem is my computer only has one sound
output, so I can only hear the mix output. Obviously I need
to be able to hear what I'm cueing up. I know what I need is
a soundcard, but which is a decent, cheap one to get?
I bought some shitty thing from PC World called a Creative
Sound Blaster which won't even seem to properly install on
my computer and when I plug my headphones into its phones
output I can't hear anything.
No one in computer shops seems to know what to sell me but
surely it can't be that complicated a piece of kit?
Any suggestions/advice appreciated, cheers

I've got a "6 in 1 card slot" but thats being used.
I think I do have firwire, according to the list of spec's.

As for money, I can spend quite a bit (say £50) but want to
spend as little as I have to.

so.remeber you cant buy pci cards.. as adaptors for laptops
are veery expensive

if you have firewire best search for a card and keep an eye
on ebay.

i found some great deals on there.

there must be something !! oh for freak sake DO NOT BUY A
USB2 soundcard.

whats bad about USB2 soundcards? The sound card I bought
already that doesn't seem to work connects via USB

There's an "aureon 7.1" soundcard on ebay at the moment only
a tenner with 2 days to go. seems suspiciously cheap to me

For the price you may as well go firewire if you want to
head into this kinda stuff.

I'm in the same situation. I've started experimenting with
laptop DJing, and I'm wondering what would be a good
external soundcard for a G4 Powerbook (with 2 or more stereo
outputs, obviously, and 2+ stereo inputs would be good,
too.)

Here are some questions for anybody who DJs on a laptop:

Does anyone DJ by just mousing it? Is this feasible? Do you
think something like a turntable with time-coded vinyl is
needed, even if you don't care about scratching?

Isn't some sort of hardware mixer with a cross-fader and EQs
(even if it's just MIDI) pretty much required? It seems too
difficult to do anything tricky using just the mouse (such
as quick cross-fades back and forth).

What sound interface do you have? (give it a quick review)

What software do you use? (give it a quick review)

i use ableton with a bitstream 3x midi controller which is
an amazingly good combo. with ableton, you simply beat match
a track, set up a few different cues ahead of time, then
save the file to be dragged into a set whenever you want -
no need to headphone cueing, altho i would like to be able
to do that sometime in the future.

the bitstream is a wonderful yin to abletons yang, as it has
8 sliders for volume and as well as a crossfader, and tons
of knobs which i have mapped to things like filter cut off,
resonance, low end levels and a bunch of effects (i have
dblue glitch running on each of my 4 tracks).

if youre going to want to do more mixing on the fly, like a
standard 2 turntable set up, it seems the timecoded vinyl
software/hardware combo is the way to go because they have
hardware dedicated to the splitting of the audio signals, so
opposed to just utilizing the outputs for a surround sound
card (ie front l and front r for the main mix and rear r and
rear l for cueing) which will eat up a lot more cpu cycles
than you are likely to want to part with (especially for jkd
with his ancient g4).

p.s. the only reason i have that big ass mixer there is so i
can have both my "monitors" (creative desktop speakers =
monitors ha!) and headphones playing the output as well as
whatever pa i'd be plugging into.

$1 for a y splitter. Deck one could be left out and deck two
right out. Mono mixes are tuff as shit. Be a man.

I'm not sure if I understand your idea. If you send one deck
to left and the other to right, what would you plug that in
to? Sure, if you had a mixer with a cross-fader, that'd
work... and you could monitor with headphones if your mixer
had that. Is that what you meant?

Hm, I just thought of another way to do it. You could output
the 'mix' through left, and the cue through right. Then, you
could plug left into the sound system, and right into your
headphones. (you'd probably need some more cables for this
setup.) All mixing would be done on the computer in
software, using a midi controller or even the mouse. Does
anyone know if Traktor supports doing this? I just checked
Ableton Live (4) and it does.

I was thinking it'd be more useful to get a 'DJ mixer'
that's actually just a midi controller; that way I could use
it for creating my own music as well.

easiest would be mixing in software. in ableton, you could
just assign two tracks to a or b on the crossfader, then
treat the pan knob as your mix of the cue.

but honestly, dont do this if you really wanna spin parties
- it mono mixes just wouldnt cut it.
