I understand they are nuts. I find it a bit strange though how much people are frothing at the mouth to shut down this one pocket of weirdos over any other. Freedom of religion and all that. Grown adults making the decision to join etc. Why is it up to a bunch of pasty white nerds on the internet to protect us from ourselves?

Because they are particularly evil. They have killed people and stuff. That one head honcho guy shown on bbc's 'scientology and me' (or some similar title) has a delusion that he's one of the agents from the movie 'men in black' or something. They spread memes of fucked behavior such as really aggressive verbal confrontations, a sort of required avoidance of family members. Its organized sociopathology- they'll sue, follow you to intimidate, dig into your past and lie or exaggerate for their own political reasons only.

Because a real religion does not charge its members to join. There are donations by members of most churches, but the "church" of scientology is a money-make scam. Do some googling on leaked information from past members who have left scientology (at intense personal cost), as to the "ranks" of scientology and the information you learn at each level. To get to the highest level costs roughly $300,000 USD total.
No true religion charges anyone to learn the whole "truth" of that religion. Christians don't charge you $1000 each time you reach a new book in the Bible, for example. Scientology does.
And yes, the stories about them stalking/following and suing people who bad mouth the church, or even so much as take photographs of Scientologist establishments, are true. The highest-ranking members (those which haven't been completely brain-washed and made delusional) know that Scientology exists on a delicate limbo of religion and pure, malevolent greed, and will do whatever it takes (including suing people into the ground) to ensure that if you do want to call them out, you're going to have to go through legal proceedings (on the nicest level) and harassment and violence behind the curtain.
It's also been documented that they are downright sadistic when it comes to "re-educating" children (in a stable environment, shouldn't a child simply be educated?). I don't feel like digging up the articles now, (it's almost 4:30am here), but I have read of the bodies of emaciated children being found chained to radiators in the basement of Scientologist establishments. In short, these people will commit murder to ensure that the money keeps pouring in.
At its heart, Scientology was created by a man who wrote science FICTION novels. He has been quoted by several different acquaintances as having said variations of "...the easiest way to make money would be to start a religion."
You do the math.

honestly, i think people wouldn't be attacking scientology so much if it didn't go to such far lengths to prevents any ridicule/questioning in the first place.
the whole thing with anonymous is more of a protest of scientology's methods of controlling information rather than its "religious practices" - after all, isn't the free flow of information the central tenant of the "pasty white nerds on the internet" sect?
imo.

oh scientology is evil alright
l. ron hubbard was a drug-addicted, megalomaniac hypocrite who would do anything for power and fame
the little good the agency has to offer is drowned by the sheer malevolence it's spewing through its organization
still, it shows how easily people are led, much like any other religion

My gripe with them is that they suppress dissent against and criticism of them ruthlessly, and that they're gung-ho about infiltrating and controlling government.

you only hate them because they're successful. why doesn't anyone go after eckankar, or avatar, or est these days?
if you'll just fill out my convenient survey and schedule a session with my e-meter, we can put your negative feelings about scientology behind you.

I never been to a church that didn't un-invite you if you didn't put something in the collection plate. Its been a while, but most organized churches like money, want money and need it.
The irony is the people fighting all these evils in the world like Scientology are starting to resemble churches themselves. The anti-church church.
