Wondering if anyone knows of a program out there that would
change all the bright bits of my screen to darker shades, so
that I could use my computer more comfortably at night?

Using a fullscreen putty session is lovely, because it's
completely black, and then I change to firefox and BAM my
eyes are stabbed with bright light.

I don't want to just dim the brightness of my monitor
either. I want more of an effect like this.. only
with EVERYTHING

yeah, i know what you mean. on my laptop i can just drop the
brightness by pressing a button, but on a desktop screen it
can really hurt when you're staring at apps with a darker
scheme.

staring at putty for too long is dangerous for the health
anyway... damn shells/telnet/ssh arggghhh

sorry, i dunno any apps off the top of my head, but i'm sure
they exist. maybe even give litestep a go! man, i haven't
used that for years...

I think I would actually kill for such an application.

i use computer software at work that is like looking at
teletext and all on black backgrounds. i thought it was
shit, and in many respects it is, but its easy on the eyes.

No it's not possible as the windows and menu colors are set
in the program code, Adobe CS3 annoyed a lot of people
because there's no way to change the color of the windows
from white to dark gray or other color.

Nvidia as some windows settings but I haven't played with
it, you can change the transparency of some windows, if the
background is dark the light shades would dim out.

The thing is, I'm almost CERTAIN you can get programs that
invert all the colours on the screen... In which case, it
must be possible to program something that changes all
brightish colours to some nice dark ones..

that's my thinking behind it anyhow

wear shades with little holes cut out in them ....or stick
filter plastic onto your screen

or just kill everyone that uses a computer so that you don't
have to compete against others in your life.

or use a brail monitor that has indentations and raised
lumps to feel your program

seriously tho turn up all the lights in your room put a
lamp near your line of sight that helps.

If you have an nvidia card, you can just drop the brightness
in the settings thingie from the thing in the thing-box
where the clock-thing is.

ummm, maybe i'm not understanding right but....

start> control panel> accessibility option> accessibility
options (again).

box pops up, click the 'display' tab, check the 'use high
contrast' box. hit the setting button and choose the 'high
contrast black' option. by default 'high contrast black
(large)' is chosen, but that increases all your font sizes
too so you don't want that. click ok on all that and bingo!
everything is black innit.

It's not brightness adjustment per se, but rather dynamic
adjustment. This causes lighter shades to be darkened in
colour so the glare is not as great when on high
brightness.

For example using white text on black screen is nice at high
brightness, but switch to a window with black text on white
screen and the sudden burst of white makes your eyes hurt.

yup I was thinking the exact same thing, I was just to lazy
to type it out.

Yeah, but that's what the nvidia thing does, in essence.. it
doesn't affect all elements, though, so the mouse pointer,
and other things that are "over" the desktop (not windows,
explorer, etc, but some other things) aren't affected
apparently.

My screen does that dynamic adjustment thing all on its own,
though (even though I have that feature turned off), so
that's not a problem for me.

ah! i didn't think it interfered with things like a firefox
background, etc.. thought it just changed the button /
scrollbar / 3d object colours. cheers
