I have a kind of bipolar attitude towards how the
audience respond to what I do. I'm far more comfortable with
an audience reacting negatively to what I do, than reacting
positively. Like if I’m DJing and people start to nod
their heads or move about a bit, I really find it quite
unpleasant.

good fucking grief. and we still want SND to support ae gigs
because?

offline WhiteMtJubilee from Grasmere (United States) on 2008-04-07 15:10 [#02192164]

because they sound nice. i'm not sure what he meant during
that part of the interview, he tried to restate it later and
it came off different. i would like to have been the
interviewer 'cause i would have at least tried to get some
clarification.

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2008-04-07 15:12 [#02192165]

i do think that comment is very silly but i still love them
as the opening act for SND

yes they sound nice. and when something sounds nice it's
generally pretty hard to look disappointed and remain
immobile.

i don't see many ways to interpret that comment he made, and
i do find it very strange and even somewhat insulting.

we travel and pay to attend these performances, and i can
totally live with autechre doing their shows in the dark,
but having someone do a laptop set not wanting people to
enjoy it just takes the effin cake. It's a night out, it's a
club venue, people are drinking pints and having a laugh,
but please, out the window with all of that when SND press
play.

it gets worse too:

And with music making, there is a definite emphasis on
trying to disappoint the audience. I remember once being
interviewed on a radio station in Perth and the interviewer
asked "what will people feel when they come to see your
music?", and I answered "disappointed" (which the promoter,
who was sat beside me was not too impressed with). But
generally I’m after a complete lack of energy in both my
performances or how the audience responds. A complete lack
of anything you might want to get into.

somehow, i just find it difficult to imagine this would be a
nice guy to chat with.

...it must be some kind of ironic & harsh british humour?

Well, there was the bit about the museum as a kid when he
was "confused" and wanting that to be people's reaction,
which is different from disappointed or alienated. thats
what i meant by it not being very clear. i agree, j198, that
it's all a bit silly. i don't have to pay anyone to piss me
off.

I finally got my hands on SND 001 last week, I got them all
now, SND 001 to 006...

(004, 005 & 006 aren't even close in quality to the first
three, unfortunately. SND 003 - travelog - are the best!)

it's his honest opinion, i don't know what you're all upset
about. where do you get the idea they should jump through
your expectant hoops?

"somehow, i just find it difficult to imagine this would be
a
nice guy to chat with."

i think this every time i read one of your posts.

thats all nice and ok, but i've been to a number of ae gigs
now for which SND have opened so i have a right to express
my opinion as much as anyone. I explained pretty well what
i'm all upset about.

i don't see why you feel the need to defend SND since what
is said in the interview is pretty straightforward.

As it happens i think you're a very unpleasant boardmember
as well, but since we don't know eachother there's hardly a
point in talking about it. You can ask a number of people
on here how different i am offline. Which doenst change
anything about my ideas and opinions i might add.
