hey everyone, i've been listening a lot to fela kuti and the afrika 70/egypt 80, and while i'm sure he's come up on the mb before let me take this opportunity to invite everyone to celebrate him.
i got my first fela cd 8 years ago or so, but i've only really connected with the tunes in a big way recently, especially after digging james brown and american funk and soul, the daptone label and bands like nomo, antibalas and akoyo afrobeat orchestra. unlike so many artists, fela never lost his powers, and his music seems to just get better and better as the years go on.
if you've not heard afrobeat, it's a very intense mix of american jazz and funk and african highlife, very hypnotic dance music. although he died more than 10 years ago, there have been a lot of high quality reissues of his music (his career was early sixties to mid nineties) in the last few years.
fela said, "you africans, please listen to me as africans; you non-africans, listen to me with open mind."

some awesome stuff there, thanks!
i feel like a school kid who can't wait to get out of school to go home to listen to records. i've still got some fela albums i haven't played yet. and i've only been back at work one day after being out for two weeks!
i'll always have a soft spot for the first fela jam i heard, "shuffering and shmiling." but right now the tune stuck in my head is "teacher don't teach me nonsense."

check out "new tones," also, their second album. their first album is not quite as good. i haven't heard the new one yet...
i think the tightest, best and freshest afrobeat group is antibalas, especially "security," "talkatif" and "government magic." they have some excellent vinyl only releases too.

i've heard some antibalas in the past but it didn't catch me, think i'll give them another chance. im listening this now, this shit is so funkee
Geraldo Pino & The Heartbeats - Heavy, Heavy, Heavy
Brilliant Afro-soul-funk from a little-known but highly influential Sierra Leone artist. The man of whom Fela Kuti said "The music carried me away completely. ... Can you understand my situation at that club that night? Needing to find a job for myself, but enjoying the music so much I even forgot I myself was a fucking musician. ... After seeing this Pino, I knew I had to get my shit together. And quick!"

sounds like the african james brown, he even mimics some of james brown's put-on studio patter. sounds good, but hard to judge from 30 second samples listening on ear buds at work. thanks for the recommendation!
