Tomato.

That aside: Should they be allowed to choose a deaf
baby?

Should they be allowed to choose a baby at all?

Yar its immoral to deliberately remove a sense I think but
what do you expect when monkeys have technology.

Who cares, let them have a deaf baby, its life won't be any
more senseless anyway.

How pathetic and selfish that those 2 would want
their child to be deaf... I don't care if it makes their
lives more "convenient" or quaint, or how proud they are of
their language. They should want the absolute best for their
kids instead of pining for them to share the same handicaps
they have. Would you want to go through life never listening
to a symphony or experiencing the sounds of the ocean?

I'm not saying we've perfected the technology of detecting
genetic abnormalities, and I'm very open to the possibility
that the discarded "deaf" embryos the article mentions may
not be deaf at all. I don't support the notion that deaf
people are better off not being born; I don't mean to sound
detached or uncaring. I do, however, find it disquieting
that certain people are so willing to perpetuate genetic
disorders for the sake of the rights(?) of unborn embryos.
They seem a tad transparent, as though their main goal is to
prove that deaf people aren't missing out on anything. If
they want another deaf child so badly, why not adopt one?
Why go out of the way to create a new deaf child?

Note: it's been a long day and I should have gone to bed an
hour ago, so I apologise if I missed some important details
from the article.

i don't think they really want to do it
they're turning our attention to the fact that ivf embryos
are automatically discarded when they have deafness genes

cowell - which is what?
rapper - the x factor is looks, personality and the
character.
osbourne - talent!
rapper - and talent.

hahaha! that reminded me of david brent.

and to answer the original question, should they be able to
choose a deaf baby? no.

There are some relevant questions here:

Is deafness a handicap? If so, why? What is a handicap?
What's the difference between "forcing" your child to be
deaf and "forcing" it to grow up where it will grow up as a
result of being parented by you? Could it be a handicap to
be born in a poor neighbourhood? It can sure hinder
development.

Is it not possible that being deaf leads you to develop a
different understanding of the world, meaning that deaf
people can have valuable contributions to our understanding
of central concepts? It's the same rationale certain people
give for having more women in science (aside from the, in my
opinion, morally better argument about equality), that women
will be able to add their view on things, thus adding to our
understanding. These two arguments presuppose certain things
about deaf people and women respectively. Is this fair?

Can we consider unborn embryos from a "function" point of
view like the ones presented in the first two
question-clusters?

As Darius points out: What difference will it really make?

What this world needs is white healthy males, and some women
that can spit them out.
