say if you would consider buying an apple notebook, which of the current models do you think has the best price/performance ratio...? macbook pro is damn expensive, but why? doesn't seem to have *that* more power then the normal macbooks... mb166 costs twice as much as the mb404...? wtf?

Basically the Pro series has larger screen sizes and video cards. I'm sure there's more to it than that but basically, thats the big difference aside from the case and optical drive speeds & burner types. So it just depends on what you're doing with the machine. macbooks are fine for audio i reckon...
I have a macbook pro and parting with the money was scurry but I'm a fanboy now unless Apple skrews up. Theres some other guy around on here that's had nothing but problems with his, i'm sure he'll chime in at some point. I've been lucky i guess.

i'd say go with one of the higher end macbooks, unless you plan on gaming, with the macbook pro there's not much of an advantage - higher cpu, more ram, and a better video card. if it turns out you need more ram, just buy extra. same for harddrive space.
oh, and its oscillik who continuously had problems with his mac i believe, but its probably just his hair.
definitely pay extra for apple care tho, that's saved me a bundle already.

Probably my next big toy is a laptop that I can hook up to my wireless network...I need something else to make use of that router aside from my ps3.. And it'll be an Apple. I do like those curves you see.

I was going to post some trash about how Mac is way too expensive for what you get but then i remembered that there are Mac people and there are PC people and it's basically like arguing over abortion law.

find a student and get a discount for the bottom of the line macbook pro £1100. the macbooks themselves have never been better but at the end of the day, it's something that will probably sit on your lap everyday for the next 3-4 years. I've got a powerbook and i'd not like to go back to a plastic enclosure. You get a considerably better keyboard on the pro. + Backlit keyboard-which is actually really good when you're typing in a bed at night. bigger screen and the option of a matte display finish [which i think is better] and in general a bit more umph (usually a better graphics card but i've not looked recently] and expandability. I've had mine for 4 years, cost £2100 at the time which was a huge amount and it's really the best computer i've ever owned by miles. i've had no problems with apple. The screen died once over the years and they had it back to me in 5 days, applecare is worth buying but you can buy it a year after you've purchased, so you can spend a bit more on specing out your laptop+future proofing it the best you can. . . .

best price/performance ratio = middle macbook (white) on an edu apple store
(but some call the macbook "the little oven" and that would scare me off - I had a PB 12" for a while and got really tired by hearing the fan all the time)
quietest/coolest/less fan whine = MacBook Pro 17" (I'm on a PowerBook 17" and while it's large as a smaller kitchen table it's quiet and perfect for musicmaking...)

for comparison's sake, im generally running adium, firefox (with tons of tabs open), azureus, vlc, itunes, and photoshop and the fan hardly comes on - only when im opening another cpu intensive app (neooffice for instance) or ff comes up with some site with way too much flash media to load.

thanks for the helpful replies guys!
ach crap, that article makes me want to wait till the end of the year, but i can't.
i'm still unsure if the alu body, bigger display and grafx card (yes, and ambient light detecting backlit keyboard yawn) justify the really high price for the mb pro.... bestest current macbook vs. bestest current mb pro: same hdd, same superdrive, same ram, almost same cpu...
damn damn.... in the end i'll probably run with the mb pro even if i shouldn't pricewise.

well, for the consumer-model it's cheaper to offer just one form of display. I totally forgot about that - but the glossy screen is a real no-no for me too... I was comparing models last week in an apple store and the glossy screens reflections weren't that bad - but still, I'll buy a mirror if I want one... the pro models matte screens are lot nicer, I think.
(but my apple care lasts til october so I shouldn't worry :) )

My plan is to buy one of the black macbooks, and use it with a big Samsung screen (because i think the screen on it is a bit too small, and i'm vulgar)
BTW, how is that project you where doing coming along (the one with the interactive sort of music track)???
I'd really like to discuss it some more with you, as i'm doing a similar school project right now.

i'm pretty happy with my glossy macbook. the colors look so much better than the blandness of a matte screen.
glossy = sexy

i iike the gloss as well.
a nifty little thing is you can go into the universal access pane in system preferences and up the contrast a bit; it makes things even shinier.
