Intense Techno in the dark

Music Autechre

Abstract estranging sounds

AMSTERDAM The performance of veterans Autechre was very
dark, the British electronics duo that has represented the
top of the bill of the electronic avant-garde for more than
fifteen years. Dark first of all because Rob Brown and Sean
Booth presented their new album Quaristice Thursday night
live in a completely dark Melkweg. Even the bar in the
middle of the hall was closed. The gentlemen themselves were
on a stage that was only lid by the lights of the
equipment.

That the audience stared into a black hole is usual for
their gigs by the way.

The unlit surroundings were a fitting framing for the
threatening music of Autechre.

By experimenting in the outer regions of dance the duo
constantly seeks out adventure.

Complicated abstract sounds and tinny beats are made into
difficult rhythmic constructions that go all over the place
with a manic unpredictability. This results in a hard to
consume techno, to which you can’t really dance but which
you have to undergo.

Pushing and pulling the rhythms rolled over each other in
the hour long set, until they formed an ever changing
collage. Admirable that those many layers nowhere got muddy.
With an occasional speeding up they aggressively worked
towards an encapsulating ending.

The sporadic stripped down parts were the only somewhat
danceable moments.

The almost complete lack of melodies in Autechre’s more
recent work strengthened the eerie (“unheimisch”, big)
feeling during the show. In earlier productions warm
melodies gave some support and recognizability. Now the live
much stronger emphasized subbasses gave the needed grip.
Basses that partly due to the lack of light got through into
the body much deeper.

Due to this setting the cacophony of sounds came through to
you very direct, thus strongly focussing you on the music.

The unrest that sets in you possibly makes it hard for you
the surrender. But Autechre lets the audience struggle with
their non-visual senses that much that that leads you to an
interesting inner struggle.

You can either give yourself up to the estranging experience
of the senses, or shield yourself from it to try and
determine what the key to the Autechre secret is.

And that’s what makes this performance a unique intense
experience.

there was plenty of dancing. not by big of course. he is too
shy to meet other xltronicians, let alone look geeky on the
dancefloor.

nice little review there, though i don't quite agree with
all of it. specially the "This results in a hard to consume
techno, to which you can’t really dance" part.

but maybe this is related to soundsytem somewhat. i saw them
on untilted tour and there was almost no bass, so it really
wasn't all that danceable. this time around there was a huge
bass, really powerful sound setup and it was practically
impossible not to dance.

how cares how you look dancing..it happens in the dark
anyhow, doesn't it : )

heh
i got almost sick from the amount of bass i got on the
untilted tour, i was completely exhausted the next day,
though that could be from general other stuff. it depended
greatly on where you were in the room. maybe they got to
control it better this time

dunno..back in 2005 the sound was really shit. this time it
was one of the best sounds i have ever heard. appart from
one time i saw pan sonic and throbbing gristle which was
almost silly. everyone in the room was vibrating together
with sound : )
