Does anyone use genre tags?

Are any of your genre tags actually useful? For instance,
where does one say, "Ok, this is alternative, but this is
rock!" etc.

IDM versus a million other terms (most of which are equally
vague).

Most musicians who give away music, nine inch nails,
radiohead, etc. haven't been filling out the genre tag
anyway. I'm tempted to delete all of the genre info from my
collection.

All right-- good enough for me.

So long, ID3 genre tags.

i dont use them, but have a few friends who do.

they mostly use really broad ones, like electronic, rock,
hip hop, reggae etc.

I mean if the artist him/herself decides genre is
irrelevant, what use is it for the audience/listener/critic.
Can you dig that?

All it is is an extra nag screen when you save an mp3.

well maybe the artist him/herself left the genre field blank
so that the audience/listener/critic can decide for
themselves.

can you feel it

I bet trent was all bumbed out when he learned nirvana did a
suicide already. Now it wouldn't be original anymore.

I use them but i try to keep the list of genre's short. On
an 60 gig Ipod, I can't just listen to the whole list on
random because there is probably like 10-20 gigs of stuff i
just rarely want to listen to (merzbow, moby, this mortal
coil). Maybe i want to shuffle within the 10 gigs of indy
rock on my Ipod only and not hear any of the 23 gigs of
polka.

it's just another way to conveniently browse through your
library. Especially if you have TONS of music and aren't
really sure what you have a hankerin' to listen to.

"I know I wanna listen to something with a lot of auto-harp
and dulcimer in it... a hippie artist with a beard... but
what ... should ... Ah! The folk genre's beloved Bonnie
Prince Billy."
