It seems that in the majority of cases either you love Autechre or you hate them. You either revel in their pseudo-intellectual creativity or think it's a load of self-important nonsense.
Either the critics are being fooled, the fans are being fooled or Autechre are fooling themselves. Personally, I think there's a little bit of truth in all three. One simple fact remains though, their music is going nowhere at the moment, and repetition is boring whichever way you look at it.

Autechre's live show is mind blowing.\
we see glimpses of them on stage, moving slightly to the rhythm. like leaves shaking on a tree in fall. Tiny girations. Nimble finger-work. Mice moving, buttons depressing.
THEY RULE!!!!

I always find gig/album reviews by big publications with lots of journalists to be somewhat redundant. It is afterall just one persons opinion, which is probably not even shared by the rest of the team, but is still published under the umbrella of the main company/magazine etc...

What's to understand? The people who don't understand are usually those who give good reviews, because they're too scared to be uncool and tell it like it is.
As for live, never been to see them live, but I don't think Autechre should even play live. The ambience in theatres or halls does not suit this music at all, it's intimate and technical and suited to headphones or home listening. How can you stand with 500 other people and listen over those wretched, deafening 10 foot speakers. Sounds like the most tawdry, boring night out ever.

well i guess that about sums it up then, you've never seen them play therefore dont think they should ever play. great logical deduction

Agreed. I think where critics like this have heard so much bull about "understanding" it, they go at it like that. Then when they find they don't "get it" cos they're listening to it too hard, they don't like it.
Put it on loud. Let your body move. Freak out. 5 stars out of 5.

thats not really agreeing. you don't have to 'get' something to enjoy it. this is still an opinion.
for the record. i've seen autechre quite a few times and they've always been shit hot. anyway why shouldn't a newspaper review autchre? they much more likely to be objective about it. maybe a biased fanboy should write the review.

This actually sounds exactly like the first time I saw Autechre live. There was absolutely nothing to see except darkness, some smoke and the glowing apples on their laptops. The music was awful, an hour of pounding amorphous, unrecognizable noise. I bought a t-shirt at that show. it says "autechre" on the front in drab gray on gray and "ae" on the back, like a minimal version of the joke, "I went to ae and all i got was this lousy shirt."
The second time I saw them though, It was fucking great. They had no laptops on stage that I could see. They just rocked like 2 or 3 drum machines and it ruled.

To be honest, I think reviews are kinda pointless. You could never easily get an unbiased review. People around me who haven't even heard any Autechre stuff already think it's shit cos I listen to it heh...
Ae are brilliant and are producing the most innovative stuff around at the moment in electronic music.
