I have seen the first half of Death Proof (and it didn't
impress me that much, although I gather that the 2nd half is
more exciting) so far, but I loved Planet Terror, so for now
I'll vote for:

PLANET TERROR

Rodriguez seems to be more in love with the idea of just
making trashy films, instead of trying to assimilate or
subvert them like Tarantino. I guess that means he's cooler
and better.

Planet Terror, the dialogue in Death Proof is one of the
worst in movie history.

I though Death Proof was the best.

One was really awesome to watch the first time around, the
other was something I would watch over and over.

I creamed my pants watching both in the theater, I'm a huge
b-movie buff, and I really enjoyed the film(s).

Need more Fred Williamson !

the end, i'm more a death proof kinda guy. hot girls mix
better with behind the wheels of hot cars than running
screaming from aliens.

You have to be really into Tarantino's dorky hipster
dialogue to fully enjoy the 1st half of Death Proof. Since
it is supposed to be kitchy he takes full liberty in laying
it on thick.

I was disappointed that these were released seperately on
DVD. Because of what they are I don't think they quite cut
it as standalone movies. I was more into the theatre double
feature experience with all of the commercials and
intermission reels.

Hopefully they will release a special edition box with both
movies and all the extras.

Death Proof is great. Love the crash scenes. Really good
action directing,..better than Planet terror in that way.
Planet terror is non stop action, and funnier though so some
people might like that better

I love Deathproof, especially the full length version. I'm
a big fan of Tarantino-style character study ala Jackie
Brown and I feel like Deathproof was exactly that. In the
first half we are introduced to a group of fine young
ladies. We get to hang out with them and fall in love with
them. We begin to see why Stuntman Mike is so enamored with
them. Along those lines, one of my favorite elements is the
subplot where the Eli Roth and his buddy are plotting to
fuck our girls. By that point in the movie, we know the
girls so much better than these assholes do. It makes us
feel closer to the girls and it makes their murder so much
more tragic.
Then part II. We meet another group of fine women, but
these women are far less helpless than the first set. Again
we see why Stuntman Mike likes them so much but we also see
that perhaps this time Mike has met his match. We begin to
salivate at the prospect of revenge for the death of our
first set of girls.
The climax plays out as a delicious, merciless, hunting of
the so-called Death Proof Mike who is revealed as nothing
more than a crying baby; a helpless insect at the hands of
our vengeful women who finish him off with big squish under
a boot.

I stood up and cheered!

yea, I'd have to say Death Proof satisfied something primal
in me AS WELL AS deliver some great set-ups and dialogue, so
I'd say I have more lasting respect to it than Planet
Terror, but this is a tough choice since 1) they're very
different in style, 2) they're both good.

I think the best thing about Death Proof was its soundtrack
(esp Chick Habit by the mighty Serge Gainsbourg). Other than
that it was a sexist piece of crap featuring a bunch of
shallow stereotype girls (some laughably masquerading as
anti-stereotypes) and the only saving grace, Kurt Russell. I
can't believe someone compared it to Jackie Brown
which for me is the only decent Tarantino-helmed film - this
was no great character study, it was 75 minutes of tedious
and cut-out-and-keep dialogue, one so-so car chase in the
middle, and a semi-decent (but by no means classic) car
chase at the end with an "unexpected" result. For me, it
failed on every level as an Exploitation Film - it was
insincere and too self-referentially smug (the dialogue
about the original Gone In 60 Seconds for example) which
meant it never remained "in character", it was far too slick
and clunky (the double-take dialogue, the jump cut which was
far more effective in Planet Terror and not nearly as
obvious), and most importantly, it just didn't have the
atmosphere of an Exploitation film: the nearest it comes is
in the sexist depiction of its female characters, and I'm
highly doubtful that that is a deliberate thing.

Tarantino is interesting to listen to when he's talking
about film (as in the Extra Features) - he should maybe make
documentaries instead of films.

I think it's either sexist or really feminist, probably
both. In other words, it's simultaneously sexploitative and
fem lib.

And, as the guys in Spinal Tap put it, "what's wrong with
being sexy?"

Maybe it's putting women back some eight years, or maybe the
final frontier between women and joyriding has been breached
- the last taboo broken. After this, there is no going back
to women dressing up normally and talking slow and
non-assertively. No, it's cars and guys all the way. And
random lap dances for camera.

Anyway, it's very much in the jackie brown vein of "sexist"
(re-watch some of the scenes in JB to confirm the point),
although not nearly as good or complete.

It depends on what kind of porridge you've eaten on the
morning of the day you watch a Tarantino film how you feel
afterwards.

no bullshit tangential too cool for school dialogue on 70s

You have an interesting perspective about this film. I do
think it reminds me more of Jackie Brown than any of his
other films. Of course the films are quite different, but I
feel like they are less driven by plot an more by scenes
where we just sorta hang out with the characters and eves
drop into their conversations. Tarantino does this in his
other films, Reservoir Dogs especially. It also has strong
female characters. Jackie's ability to control Ordell at
gunpoint showed similar Bad Ass-itude to the girls in
Deathproof.

I guess I can agree Deathproof is mildly sexist. But I don't
quite get what you mean by "Masquerading." I think
Tarantino has put legitimately strong and attractive female
characters in Deathproof. Even if we do spend a lot of time
looking at their sexy feet. Their conversations about their
jobs as stunt people, interest in cars, guns, and gearhead
movies makes them quite authentic to me. This may be more
true of the more complete feature length cut, as opposed to
the Grindhouse cut. Unless you are implying like jakeroffer
that girls like these are "absolutely improbable," which
seems like an untrue statement in itself.

I think I agree more with BoxBob that it may be a little
sexist while also feminist; Sexploitation in the first half
and then less so in the second half. I agree the women are
sexy. Tarantino certainly celebrates his love of women's
feet in this film, but he's a dude, and kind of a playa (at
least he fancies himself as a playa). Then he has his bad
ass girls at the end, who I think Tarantino probably finds
even more sexy than the first group because they are also
Bad Mother Fuckers.

When you say "Jackie Brown vein of 'sexist'" what do you
mean?
Are you referring to how the conniving woman who steals
money she didn't earn from the man who worked so very hard
to earn it and then killing the poor sap with a
sucker-punch, shot in the dark? Or are you just referring
to the ogling of Melanie's legs and her capriciousness in
the kitchen with Louis?

yea, I think Jackie Brown, I mean the character, is a highly
powerful female protagonist, treated with respect and
dignity by the screenwriter-director.

however, it seems that Tarantino needs a kind of more
degrading woman in his film to balance things out, or just
to play out his sexual and sadistic fantasies - hence we
have Melanie, first in the kitchen, and later portrayed as a
total bitch and shot right dead by De Niro's character. I
can see Tarantino grinning in his chair...

yeah like, Tarantino just loves the ladies. He uses a
variety of female characters in his films. From the cute
helpless Fabienne in Pulp Fiction, to the sexy superhero The
Bride. Is he sexist though? I see it more as a
celebration.

like I said, when female powers are fully unleashed, people
can see it as either degrading to women or liberating to
them... the same with porn, erotica, mini-skirts, bikinis
and teenage make-up.

offline marlowe from Antarctica on 2008-03-11 12:56 [#02184207]

I would say his sexism stems from idolising women (and thus
objectifying them) rather than from misogyny. I wouldn't
class their powers as being fully unleashed - they are
cardboard Tarantino figurines inserted into self-conscious
plots - they are his fantasy figures rather than feministic
roles.

i can agree with that, their being Tarantino's fantasy
girls.
I guess i share his fantasy. I don't really think they are
totally objectified though. they have fully cohesive and
realized personalities even if they represent Tarantino's
idea of feminism. At any rate, he has a signature style of
objectifying women. As a dude, i can only speculate that
some women might actually find it flattering.
