I should add that I love classic Romero... but I can safely say he's lost it for good with Land of the Dead and Diary.

Already saw this! Way better than Land of the Dead. I posted about it under Rate the Films you see
eh, I'll copy and paste anyways:
Diary of the Dead - 5/5
George A. Romero's latest installment in the dead series...
(Feb 15th) Friday I was privileged enough to see 'Diary of the Dead' special test screening in Chicago. I am a huge fan of the series, and was honestly pretty disappointed in 'Land of the Dead'... this being said I was very, very pleased with Diary of the Dead. I travelled 4 hours to see the movie, and it was worth every minute and dollar. George Romero has returned to his roots, and it shows very strongly throughout the film. Very realistic, and very believable. This is the ultimate zombie movie in my opion. Not over the top, and the message on how people act today in society is spot on. This movie could be done over and over from different points of view and different charaters and it would still work. Now I can't wait for it to actually be released to theaters...
everyone, go watch and support this movie when it finally arrives. the dead walk

Romero is still sticking with shambly zombies rather than agile ones, right? If so I'll see this with haste.

Yep, Shambling zombies that can cover a mile of ground per minute.
Am I asking too much of Romero to find actors that aren't stiff as a board? I really found the writing, and a lot of the acting in this movie awful, but perhaps I'm just expecting too much from Romero these days.

Yes, the zombies are realistic in that sense that they are not fast and agile, classic Romero
Acting was sub-par, but at least their was no familiar faces (aside from a brief appearance from George) I thought the story was good. Thought the movie should have been longer or shown more user submitted footage. Lots of room to expand upon the idea.

Land of the dead was great ! When I walked out I was really excited and people were like "Awww man the story was that good I didn't like it."
THE STORY WASN'T GOOD?!
Out of Night, Dawn, and Day, I like land the best (I think it's been a while since watching the others). The gore and effects are perfect, there wasn't much else I could have asked for. The only thing the others got that is much better is the crazy 70's creepy synth music.
I really want to watch this but I don't think it is showing nation wide yet.

I don't really like Land of the Dead OR even Day of the Dead. None of the characters seemed sympathetic or interesting at all. I just couldn't care about their fates or whether or not they ended up passing through a zombie's digestive tract or not.

The whole lead zombie thing didn't really work for me in Land. Him getting all frustrated then learning how to use a gun was a stretch. I understand that Day was partially about the military trying to teach them to perform menial tasks but still I don't know... These aren't like stroke victims that can be rehabilated they are dead.
Although for some reason in the Dawn remake it did not bother me when the zombies saw the dog go through the little door and they figured out they could follow. Maybe if I accept one I have to accept the other, I dunno. I guess I am drawing a line in the sand.
Now with 28 days/weeks I could see scenerios like that because they aren't dead they are infected. The idea of them learning to perform tasks doesn't seem problematic.

But the fact that they have any abilities at all means the rules can be bent very easily. If they're really dead, they shouldn't be shuffling about on the hunt for brains. The fact that they are means there is some cognitive processes going through their mind after the reanimation and I guess Romero feels that if they can do that much then they can probably learn or 'remember' to do more. The fact that the zombies swamp towards the shopping mall in Dawn is reason enough to believe one might be able to use a gun.

I read a fairly entertaining zombie novel called The Words of Their Roaring, which covers fairly similar territory as Land Of The Dead. I have to admit I preferred the book, but I don't really like Dennis Hopper that much.
Also, the military were against teaching zombies in Day of The Dead... the friction between them and the "mad scientist" who was training Bub was a main part of the film.

Anyway I think since we are familiar with the viruses, asteroid dust and all that I would like to see the following in a modern zombie film:
The Plagas thing from Resident Evil 4 (game). Those things that come out of their heads would look awesome in a movie.
The Haitian voodoo thing from like White Zombie and what looks like might get introduced in RE5. That movie The Skeleton Key wasn't all that, but some of those ideas mixed with some voodoo zombies would be pretty good.

Yes! What we need is another resident evil movie! ... not
Although, actually, i almost liked the the third RE film, 'twas alright.
But as for the 'Dead' series, the original is still my undying favourite, followed by "Dawn" and "Land" - I didn't like Day of the Dead that much, a second-rate flick IMO.
Looking forward to seeing "Diary."

Well I don't like the Resident Evil movies (the first one is ok if it happens to come on cable or something). I haven't seen the 3rd movie yet but the 2nd one wasn't very good. The 4th game was just so good that it really doesnt matter what else has happened with the franchise.

yes, yes and yes.
By the way, at some point Romero's name was attached to the Resident Evil franchise as the director to the impending film adaptation... but somehow it never happened, sadly.

i'm waiting for Romero to do a coming of age teen romantic comedy. or a musical about a lovable dragon and the boy who raised him from an egg. but the towns folk don't allow dragons! the boy must hide him away in the star sprinkle forest in the magic cave by the crystal lagoon. but the boy's brother, jealous of the dragon betrays the family and leads an angry mob with real torches and pitchforks to the cave. The dragon is trapped! but where is the boy? he's off picking birch leaves to sew a new hat for his treacherous brother. in the climactic finish of the film, the dragon blows a lavender fireball at the hat, igniting it and causing quite a commotion! The town's people are enchanted by the fireworks and decide the dragon is not so bad, he can be our friend!

I remember Romero in talks to do Resident Evil, maybe he could have done the series justice.
I liked all the original Romero films, Land the least of all. The lead zombie thing ruins it. In Day it was believable, and Day was a great movie, although it was long a drawn out. The original script for Day was TWICE the movie, but due to production and funding, he cut the other part (which mainly another group of scientists in an above ground scenario) too bad the movie got cut down... Day of the Dead original sript Dawn and Night are classic, they don't need to be touched. The remake of Dawn was poorly done in my opinion, but entertaining in parts. Started off good, then just fell apart with the characters and all, just shit. I really liked Diary, a return to the roots. Long live Romero!
