The latest issue of NewScientist is a music special. I haven't checked the online articles yet, but thought some of you might find it interesting.
One of the articles is about Five great auditory illusions

I had my hopes up for this, but these "illusions" were crap.
The Beatles one was the most impressive one, but I don't think that really qualifies as an illusion. The "phantom words" thing was the worst: I could only hear words if I deliberately tried. Just like you can pretend a song in a different language is in your language if you "bend" what you hear a bit, but it's an active process, not an illusion.
And how is phantom melodies an illusion? Just because you don't write the notes one the same line when you're writing the music doesn't mean there isn't a melody or something like that... then you could just argue that no melody is a melody; it's just "your brain grouping notes together," basically reducing the concept of melody to nothing. Same goes for the "scale illusion" though calling that one an illusion might be slightly more justified.
The links to the other stories looks nice, though. Thanks!

Oh, right.. this just made the Beatles illusion a bit less impressive:
" Eh? The background chords in the middle 8 were produced this way, and voices are exactly what they've sounded like to me for nearly 4 decades. The tenor sax solo over the chords was improvised and played by the late and very non-illusory Ronnie Scott.

Fri Feb 22 10:56:18 GMT 2008 Hi Glenn, I should have said that there is indeed a genuine sax solo in the song as well!"

Does anyone actually have the magazine? I want to know what kind of music animals prefer, if they like music at all.
