It sure is a lovely little film.

There is an anime film called "Night on the Galactic
Railroad". which I would seriously recommend. It features
cats as well, and does in a sense, explore the same themes.
If you enjoy the works of Mamoru Oshii - a slow pace, and an
almost meditative setting, and Miayazaki's works (who
doesn't?), it is worth your time.
