has anyone else had a chance to play it yet? i'm highly
enjoying it - much better than blue Dragon. It's still an
old-school turn-based RPG, but with lots of perks like
front-row defense walls and linkable skills. the graphics
fucking kill me, in that good way, like staring into the
face of a deity. a few framerate hiccups, but nothing too
terrible. i also find the story, particularly the dream
sequences, quite good also.

Sorry but I'm too manly to play RPG video games or
otherwise, the only computer personal games I plays is FTPs.

didn't play it because I haven't yet touched a 360, but I
almost bought the soundtrack cos there's some amazing stuff
there, liking it better than blue dragon on that front

I think it's funny that the 360 is getting way more JRPGs
than the PS3. This game looks good, I might buy this used
pretty soon, problem is I think FF12's ''real-time'' battle
system might have spoiled me.

I think it's funny that so many people still see the JRPG as
an interesting, viable format for video games.

ok that was much too negative. :p Just a little bored by the
fact that they all seem to share the exact same story arc,
not to mention the characters are almost always a rehash of
the same template. But hey, whatever floats your taco.

the same could be said for all FPS games released in the
last 10 years, but people don't seem to mind specific
boundaries, because only within certain boundaries it
becomes fun to mess around and express yourself...

games like blue dragon and lost odyssey are probably almost
too conventional (almost 'retro'), but not all j-rpgs are
the same.

yeah, don't get me wrong, the FPS genre is subject to the
same lack of originality. If I'm going to complain about
J-RPGs, then I should add that very few genres are
consistently original or "fresh." When so much money goes
into making a single game, I could see it being easy for
developers to fall into the "if it ain't broke...." method
of development. Thus, they stick with the proven formulae
more often than not.

yea and especially at Microsoft's behest: it seems that they
specifically hired the Mistwalker team to produce a couple
of "token RPGs" for the X-Box 360 - the height of cynicism,
in a way... It was probably in their contract to provide as
traditional RPG's as possible. (oooh, conspiracy theory!!)

Well, you know, there's obvious aesthetic/game design
differences between Eastern and Western RPGs. You can
instantly tell what continent a given RPG is from. You just
can. But dumbing either down to a ''rehash of the same
template'' doesn't do them justice, of course. Everything's
a rehash of something if you don't appreciate or understand
the details.

You could'va just said it stands for japanese rpg, the ones
the characters have spiky hair and big eyes and are all
kinds of emo and you can't tell apart the male characters
from the female ones.

i actually agree with you. I thought Blue Dragon was boring.
In fact, I don't really touch many turn-based JRPG's, but
this one grabbed me. The interesting dream story sequences
(written by an award-winning japanese novelist), several new
battle tweaks such as on-screen casting time, changing
equipment during battles and customization are really
keeping me. that, and it's nice to look at. i honestly don't
know why it's grabbing me, but it is. the storyline's quite
matured for such a game, even it is the same arc.
