As far as one of music's functions as an emotion inducing and enhancing drug, the downward spiral is one of my pills of choice for feelings of inwardly and outwardly directed rage and hate (another is the eyes of stanley pain).
I think that release was strong because he really was expressing those emotions instead of just putting on an image for profit.
But his latest releases are mediocre, following the predictable downhill graph of the entire music industry.

It is like Guitar Hero except there is a guitar, drums and microphone. As the song plays, you have to play along by holding the colored "fret" that displays on the screen and strum on time or hitting the correct colored drum pad etc.

well if there was a rockband NIN version, it would have to contain the following in the box:
1x fishnet shirt, medium density 1x clear plastic bottle of water (for the purpose of pouring the contents over...)
1x generic MIDI controller keyboard (because Reznor found out pretty early on that pouring water over 3 Model D MiniMoogs gets expensive after a while)
1x drummer (so you can throw your mic stand at him and make him bleed)
1x obligatory goth girl to stand at the front of your living room with a hand made sign saying "Trent i love you, i want you to fuck me like an animal lol"

Well don't start now...
I don't like KMFDM, Front Line Assembly and that stuff too much anymore but I still appreciate some old ministry, skinny puppy, coil etc.
Anyway some of the best stuff is NIN's remix albums, particularly Fixed and Further Down the Spiral. Great mixes by Aphex, Coil, Foetus, etc. If you want to get something get some of that stuff.

nin/reznor has done some great stuff... broken and (especially) downward spiral are amazing.
fragile didn't work for me as a whole but there are some killer moments on there (namely the instrumentals).
with teeth was incredibly weak.
year zero is much better than I was expecting; some very good tracks (some crap ones as well).
---------------
p.s. the rock band vid game tracks coming out in the nin pack are march of the pigs, the collector and perfect drug.

That NIN is considered industrial? They are kind of the alterna-rock/industrial hybrid that happened in the late 80s into the 90s. There is glam, metal, synth-pop and all that in there too. Pop Will Eat Itself, Prick, Nitzer Ebb, Stabbing Westward, Die Warzau, Sister Machine Gun, Chemlab, etc. were all bands that kind of existed in that post-industrial/glam/synth-pop/alterna-rock scene.
Industrial is such a loose term anyway. Someone could be talking about Orgy or Zoviet France when they say it.

having said that i think Year Zero is somewhat a return to form... hopefully Year Zero part 2 will be even better, although i wouldn't mind waiting a few years for it, he seems to make better music when he obsesses and perfects it over time developing his ideas fully... ie, the fragile
