Derren Brown : The System

Anyone watch this? I enjoyed it, although I wonder if he
got the idea from that episode of The Simpsons where Homer
is duped by the same thing to bet on the football until Lisa
points the system out to him--she's a clever one.

I downloaded it from Bitsoup. It'll be available on channel
4's On Demand service.

I started to work out what he was doing from the coin
"trick". I still don't have a clue about how he did that
thing with the photographs though.

It was pretty damn good, and working with logic and
probability in music/synthesis lately helped with working
out his "System". pff what a cheat :P

It was a great "penny dropping" moment when I realised what
he was up to; I like the way he challenges perception on his
shows.

spot on. i saw it coming about halfway throu. the photo bit
was obviously nlp but it's still clever, but it's a shame he
never explains his techniques (or v rarely), i think a lot
of ppl could learn a lot if he did.

I know that he has a couple of books out, but I'm not sure
how detailed the content is. I'm guessing it's a bit like
"magick" or spirituality - a person may give details of some
techniques / combination of techniques which have worked for
them, which they've learnt and evolved, or created
themselves, rather than a blueprint of how it's done.

Like I said before, I wish I had that level of concentration
:@

i read some of one of his books its highly entertaining, not
strenuous and just like him, toungue-in-cheek. i think youd
enjoy it.

Cool - reckon I'll pick one up: I enjoyed the darkness of
Trick or Treat?. . .so up until a certain point I
wasn't sure if he'd let the woman lose her money, but then I
twigged that he'd probably not put the money on the horse he
stated :D

trick or treat didnt work for me i spotted it too early

and ye i suspected he hadnt made the bet and had pretended
to choose the outsider especially after he didnt mention the
odds to her, not that she wouldve twigged

haha yeah, after having her world whipped out from
underneath her about a minute before the race started
probably left her thinking less than clear! :D

anyway. i got the feeling most of them didnt have degrees in
astrophysics

like any good stage magician, he leaves sufficient wiggle
room for wild speculation and mystery, he's not going to
simply reveal everything - that would run contrary to his
purposes as an entertainer...

but no matter how much i enjoyed watching The System, my
enjoyment was slightly dampened by the fact that I figured
his "system" out within five minutes into the show... oh
well

and yea, I have no idea how that photograph thing was
done...

Wasn't it done in the same way? Many groups of "experts"
run through the room over many days until he jags the right
combo. The 24 different ways of lining up are covered by
having 24 different envelopes in the room. He just picks
the right envelope once he sees how they line up.

The photo's are harder. If there are truly 500 different
photo's it seems impossible. 500x499x498x497 is a massive
number......... hmmmmm

yea that's conceivable - that's what I thought about the
envelopes, anyway, that he'd just pick the one that had the
right combo... but, in that case, how many hundreds of
"experts" would he have to have contacted? this is getting
really strange...

there has to be some trick to the photos, some
sleight-of-hand or just suggestion...

regarding the photos trick, i believe there is preparation
before the stunt is pulled off. for example, he might have
mixed in a number code in an email to them. i also noticed
how he suggests to them not to let the names influence them,
which most people wouldn't have considered initially, so by
saying that he's pushing them in the direction he wants.

Yeah, by using suggestion you could reduce the odds a
little....... and then run multiple groups until you luck
out.

what's so mystifying

the way he did it was by betting on all the horses of all
the races

ie, WHAT A TWAT

Aengus, I think you missed the point . . . the point was
that he demonstrated how something apparently impossible and
miraculous, which people would fall for (e.g. Religion), is
in fact quite easily achieved through misdirection and
showmanship.

His point is to generally demystify, whilst putting in a
couple of genuine head-scratchers.

I don't think he proved much, except that people can be
gullible. What is proves about homeopathy or religion is
another matter.

figured it out form the beginning, very old scam. although
couldn't figure out the coin one (slapped my forehead when
he revelaead it) the photo thing must be prepared. and the
eding i do't know what to say about it. probably the whole
thing is acted.

I doubt very much there are actors, because Derren Brown is
always stresses that he does not use actors (except as
stooges when setting up a "member of the public").
