benn jordan (the flashbulb) has released his new album now,
and with it has written some writing about fans supporting
the artists and such. he uploaded the album on what.cd which
is currently available for freeleech. haven't listened to it
yet but it's a nice attitude to have.

Hello listener...downloader...pirate...pseudo-criminal...

If you can read this, then you've more than likely
downloaded this album from a peer to peer network or
torrent.

You probably expect the rest of this message to tell you
that you're hurting musicians and breaking just about every
copyright law in the book. Well, it won't tell you that.

What I would like to tell you is that my record label
understands that a large portion of people pirate music
because it is easier than buying it. CDs scratch easily,
most pay-per-download sites have poor quality and ****ty DRM
protection, and vinyl is near impossible to find or ship
without hassle.
In many cases I wonder why people buy CDs at all anymore. A
few like the tangible artwork, some haven't adapted to MP3s
yet, but most do it because they have a profound love for
music and want to support the artists making it. Kind of
restores your faith in humanity for a moment eh?

So, now what?
Like the album? About to go "support the artist" on iTunes?
Well, don't.
Alphabasic is currently in a legal battle against Apple
because NONE of our material (Sublight Records included)
receives a dime of royalty from the vast amount of sales
iTunes has generated using our material.

Want to buy a CD just to show your support?
If you don't particularly like CDs, don't bother.
Retailers like Best Buy and Amazon spike the price so high
that their cut is often 8 times higher than the artist's.
Besides, most CDs are made out of unrecyclable plastic and
leave a nasty footprint in your environment.

If you do particularly like CDs, buy them from the label (in
our case, alphabasic.com). After manufacturing costs are
recuperated, our artists usually receive over 90% of the
actual money coming out of your wallet.
In addition, all of our physical products are made out of
100% recycled material.

Want to show your support?
Go here and browse our library of lossless, DRM-free
downloads.
Already have that?
Then feel free to donate whatever you want to your favori

.. favorite artist. 100% will go directly to them.
Hell, you can even donate a penny just to thank the artist.

If you really like 'The Flashbulb - Soundtrack To A Vacant
Life' and want to show your support without it going to
greedy retailers, distributors, and coked-up label reps,
then click the button below.
[link to http://www.alphabasic.com/index2.htm ]
If you send us your mailing address, Alphabasic may
occasionally send you various goodies (overstocks, stickers,
even rare CDs) in appreciation and encouragement for your
support.
Thanks for reading.
Who knows if my little business plan here will work to fund
new releases, but even failure is better than the crappy
label/distributor/retailer system musicians have suffered
from for over 50 years.
We hope you enjoy the music as much as we do releasing it.
Finally, if you plan on sharing this release, please include
this file. The only reason it is here is to show the
listener where he can support his favorite artists!

Benn Jordan
CEO - Alphabasic Records

From Benn's blog:

"So after a 5 hour nap, I awake to see that the viral effect
of “infringing my own label’s copyrights” has probably
surpassed that of a $20,000 promotion budget."

I still like CDs. If I pay for something, I want a physical
product, not some mp3 floating about in cyberspace. But
maybe that's just me.

I do like his post, though.

it's all very well, and some good points
trouble is that nearly all people don't care enough, even if
they are the few that are enthusiastic about music
or they are confused with themselves
or they are greedy/selfish
so all music will be free soon
people will be buying houses, or oil, or weapons instead

And then people will stop making interesting music, because
they'll have to work all day at proper job land and the last
thing they'll want to do is spend the rest of the day
tweaking some electro-acoustic CeleverTechno masterpiece.

i don't see a problem with dling music and donating like 5
bugs to an artist when i like his album, i've done it with
wikipedia and some freeware

an economy of niceness

i don't think every artist should/actually expect to make a
living off music (and music alone) these days. it's insanity
that music actually costs as much as it does.
i wonder if the music industry will be split in two. the
mainstream music industry dudes, releasing music however
they want to people who are happy to buy CDs at shops, and
then a growing independant group of people who are more
interested in releasing/sharing music for little/no cost to
people who clearly aren't gonna pay for every piece of music
they listen to.

i mean, that's pretty much how it's looking today, but if
you wanna listen to so much music without paying then you're
some illegal bastard who's ruining the lives of people who
expect to make money using a dying method of distributing
music.

sorry if this post makes no sense. i'm falling asleep and
wrote majority of squinting through blurry eyes.

i entirely agree.

the people who are going to be putting out great music are
those who, despite having to work some shit 9-5, are still
gonna come home and work their asses off for their PASSION.

that's right, music is a PASSION not a businesss (as with
all other art). When you get people being paid to make
music and just make music you start breeding things like
britney spears, um.... i dunno, cant come up with any more
blatantly awful pop artists off the top of my head cuz im
just not exposed to it anymore. i like that.

one listen is all it takes to realise it's incredibly not
that good.

what IS pretentious.. is the number of tracks. he expect us
to sit through that?! i thought his previous album, Human
Action Network - Welcome To Chicago (The Acid Anthology),
was going overboard with 21, but 31 is just .. too much.

also, theres a limited edition with AUDIO COMMENTARY.
(pretentious!) pretentious! / pretentious!

yeah, as for the huge amount of tracks, and with so many
weak ones, it's funny that it's this album he can't stress
enough about the shit hes going on about (which is a
provoking read but I guess it's the person saying it that we
take into judgements) to buy this album when this is
clearly the type of album that you download, grab
5-10 decent tracks to put on your portable and delete the
rest.

benn jordan (formerly benn l jordan, like richard d james
because thats totally idm) is an idiot who thinks making
long winded diatribes about issues he deals with somehow
makes them important and in turn, somehow makes people
interested. but in reality all he does is talk about the
utter obvious over pages and pages of worthless text that
nobody but his 16 year old fans will appreciate.

his music is exceedingly mediocre.

The drumming on most tracks is pretty stupid I might add,
it's like he was trying to prove he can make a drum track
that isn't 4/4.

i finally listened to the album and gotta say, while its
certainly nothing innovative or mind-blowingly awesome, its
certainly a good record.

its not something to grad your attention, but its pleasant
at the very least, and varied enough to not get too stale.

i mean, it's been done before, but... oh never mind, we're
all so fucking pretentious here ourselves i doubt i'll be
able to change anyone's mind.

;)

Actually I think 'viral advertising' works by getting people
to talk by word of mouth. For example even if you have a
negative opinion on the flashbulb and type something like
disasemble just did, the negativity doesn't even matter. The
point is that we are discussing it. Now our braines are
filled with 'flashbulb' memes and more people are more
likely to find and listen to that music. When someone goes
to xltronic they see a topic about it; maybe it shows up in
google, maybe the comparisons to richard d james even put
the flashbulb in the search results of a google search for
'aphex twin'.
But I did listen to 'please don't remember' on his myspace
(yeah, I got meme-icized myself) and it seemed really
excellent on the first listen but not nearly as good on
repeated listens some reason.)
