How about whoever wants to tries to make their own original song(s), but specifically try to emulate the overall style/quality/feel of these 2 diddy kong racing tracks as best as you can:
Frosty Village and Pirate Lagoon
By that I mean try to make your own approximately minute-ish long loop that is similarly assembled from catchy, colorful, entertaining parts with a similarly slightly fast pace and similar simultaneous melodic lines (polyphony)- you know just basically try to make it similar in style but original, and loop back to the beginning. Doing this is quite hard for me anyway, and I wonder how hard it is for others.
And hopefully reveal information about your the creative process you used, such as whether you started with a series of chords first, or whether you make a main melody first (I think I might try both attempts), etc. Even if it ends up sucking I'd be interested in hearing it because I'm interested in what works and what doesn't.
Or if you think this is a shit idea, just type 'go to hell' or do nothing or do whatever you want.
Sincerely, Snuggle Slug

but for serious, it's a nice idea mr. slug. I'd like to participate but I need a midi keyboard. I can't make music with just a mouse like some people can.

Using a midi keyboard is a good point that I don't often think of, and could be a huge advantage over entering it manually in modplug. I should get one eventually.

:) Mine is definately going to sound like shit to. My brain is missing melody neurons. I havn't made my attempt yet, but have listened to those tracks a lot trying to form a gameplan on how the hell to tie it all together.
I used to think making the main melody line first (then chords later) is the best way, but after listening to those tracks, they seem to have series of chords that are fairly simple repetitive patterns. And it might be easier to get the chords into those simple patterns if you start with them first.
Also as far as I know the chords just seem to be 'loose guides' for which notes can be played within the timespan of that chord. Like MOSTLY the melody is constructed of the same chord notes but certainly not ONLY those notes. Really I have no clue, and my best attempts have been ignoring all theory and just doing what sounds the best. This stuff seems like it should be easy but grasping it has been surprisingly elusively difficult for me.

haha yeah. tried to make it as quickly as possible really :D
that was all reason 3.0.. used a midi keyboard for most of it, though that's only for working certain parts out. alot of arranging and cleaning up is done by hand.
glad it got a lol :)

Looking foward to hearing the results... Pigster, yours is very good (albeit still annoying as hell- not your fault).

Those tracks are just unrelentingly upbeat and annoying. I could see some worker at a theme park listening to that all day and going home and suffocating his kids and hanging himself. They're that bad. I listened to them again just now, to make sure, and I had to light up a cigarette. The tunes caused this slow tension that made every muscle in my upper body flex tightly.
Here's some good, catchy and well composed old school midi from Monkey Island.

pigster- I actually think this wouldn't feel too out of place in 'mega bomberman' for genesis
ijonspeaches- thanks, this is interesting. The chord notes and other melody sound great, but only by themselves in my opinion. When together they don't quite sound in 'harmony' somehow with eachother (note-wise). But the actual pattern/beat/shape of the melody sounds fine in relation to the chords. Maybe the notes just need tweaking to 'fit' the pitches of the chords, not that I know how to do that. This is exactly what's happened to me so far. I put down a chord progression that sounds fine by itself then made a melody on top. At the time it seemed fine, but then I relisten a half hour later and ugh delete it. Somehow these videogame track creators arrange notes of any complexity and just cast some sort of 'auto harmony' spell on all of it and it all sounds perfect.
jkd- this sounds pretty 'correct' to me. Did you make the main melody or the chords first (I assume those bass notes exactly follow the chord structure)?

I wrote the chords first (i.e. the bass), then the melody. The chords are really polka-dot-door and the melody was found by just randomly riffing over the chords as they repeated.

The race is underway! from my vantage point it looks like Pigster has a solid lead.
1. Pigster 2. jkd 3. ijonspeches (I actually like yours best but it doesnt quite go with the theme.)
4. Pirate Lagoon 5. Frosty Village.
w M w is back there somewhere, he hasn't used his power boost yet so he could easily make his way to the front of the race any second now.

This turned out better than I thought I guess after multiple restarts. It still lacks a main catchy melody I guess (and still not good enough quality or long enough), maybe because I started with chords first:

You should give yourself a bit more credit, your melodic structure is good here, and it's usually good in general. I don't think this track quite fits with the diddy kong racing nightmares you posted earlier (it's not as annoying to me), at least it dosent fit as well as Pigster's track. But it's still fun.
