Sometimes I lie awake for hours just thinking about shit. I'm not one of those people that can shut off instantly. Weed helps for me to sleep, but I haven't smoked in some time and I find myself tossing and turning a lot. My mum says I have a bad conscience.

try headphones n music ..or bring a dvd player into your bed room ...maybe a book if your ointo that format. media helps to you relax your mind sometimes rather than silence alowing it to go off on one...
another thing is to write lists during the day ...if you have most of this on paper and methods to sort various bits n bobs out it can help
me i just go to bed when i am so knackard i sleep as soon as i hit the pillow ...only way for me at present,

depends. when im sleepy i don't have any troubles falling asleep..happens within minute or two. it's different when i need to get some sleep and im not sleepy..i usually can't fall asleep at all in those situations. i have at most weird sleeping pattern. sometimes i'll fall asleep at 8, 9 pm and wake up at 1 am then got back to sleep at 9am or 10am for another 2, 3 hours or so.

yes, masturbation helps and so does a bout of good sex. listening to music has differing outcomes. sometimes i enjoy it to a point of relaxation where i slowly drift off into la la land. other times i concentrate so much on the music, keeping me awake. i suppose it depends on the music. reading a book only makes me sleepy when i'm sleepy, somewhat like tolstoyed said. anyway, yoyo, i think you have the answer, i should just not think too much, but that's tough because i have an over-active imagination.

I used to be like that but then I set a waking up hour so no matter how tired I am I will wake at that hour, sleeping stopped being a problem all of a sudden.
Masturbating doesn't help, what helps is going downtown and pimp your ho's a bit and hit them with the pimp cane.

yeah ive been having problems too recently. I've been lying awake at night for an hour or more just thinking about stuff. I always have that problem when I've got stuff on my mind. When that's the case I can't sleep for hours and when I do, I get terrible nightmares. I think since I've been home though, it's mostly down to the fact that I'm not doing as much exercise. When I'm at uni I walk everywhere and go to the gym, but since I've been home and revising I've not really been doing much else! So I guess it's a combination of lack of exercise, napping in the day, and worrying that's been my issue since I've been home! I find that consciously stopping yourself thinking and emptying your mind once you're in bed works a treat. :)

Try to relax or use some sedatives, though they are quite lame. Insomnia is such a nightmare (after 3 days of continuous mumbling of the mind).

Drink chamomile. That won't knock you out itself, but it should markedly help you get there. It usually allows me to sleep even on the tail end of a psychedelic experience when the insomnia is indomitable.
For better results, add 50-100mg diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

Sorry to contradict you, but drinking before bed is a bad idea. It will put you to sleep but gives you a really unsettled night's sleep. It might knock you out but you'll probably keep waking up during th night.

I'm just talking about one or two shots, not a night on the town. Enough so that you can still read yourself to sleep comfortably.

I didn't dispute that. It doesn't need to be a night on the town to have detrimental effects on your sleeping habits. Im not making it up, im just relaying to you what i had to study about sleeping and things that aggravate insomnia, as part of my degree.

Well if it works for you that's great! They just always say to regulate sleeping patterns, get lots of exercise in the day but to avoid it and other stimulating stuff like staring at the tv/computer right before bed and to avoid nicotine and alcohol in the evenings too! Im sure it varies between people but those are the general guidelines.

You'll enjoy this one: When I'm really, really comfortable in my bed I start having these completely random phrases or things flick through my head. Its not like a schizo's voice, but like I just randomly think them. Some of the best of these would be: "test mans! deciet! not in the refrigerator!", "like a tire handle", "look at its feelings and thighs", "bags with colored skin on it", and "she used to dream up some diet sanders" (the last one was to a melody I can't remember).

Last night, damn, I had the farts, no joke. Like look at a clock and watch how long it takes to tick a second or a second and a half. That's about how long they pretty much all were, and all 100% loud and rude sounding. And there was like fifty of them probably but I didn't count.

As long as I don't sleep during the day, i'm perfectly fine. I can get to sleep pretty much instantly really, even if I haven't done much physically during the day. But if I sleep during the day (and I did this a lot at uni), i'm gonna be in for a slow start to getting sleep. I will add however that I never, ever wake up during the night (consciously at least) so my sleep cycles are always uninterupted. I hardly ever feel like shit in the morning.
I found that when I was working, the combination of 10 hour days, plus 1 or 2 mile walks really helped. I was literally shattered by the end of the day. So much so that I got into the habit of going to bed much earlier (aka before midnight) and getting to sleep instantly. If you have a job which demands you to use your brain (especially creatively), then thinking about weird shit is the last thing on your mind at the end of the day.

I've got an all-purpose cold that's really kicking my ass (congestion, sinus headache, runny nose, fluid in lungs, diarrhea, vomiting), and getting to sleep last night was a real fucking hassle. I feel like shit and I just want to get to sleep because my whole body aches and I want to get over this fucking sickness, but I had to lay in bed for over 2 hours just to fall asleep for 2 hours, only to be woken up by hiccups and diarrhea, only to fall back asleep for another 2 hours. I'm assuming that since I feel so shit throughout the day that I can't think of anything to do but nap, that that is why I can't sleep at night right now. I CAN NOT WAIT TO BE OVER THIS COLD.
