Nigel Godrich Question

Ok, so this might just be some weird delusion on my behalf,
but I felt like bringing it up anyway.

In Rainbows seems to have this real colourful, kind of loud
production to it, where there’s heaps of focus on making
certain sounds stand out. I don’t really know how to
describe it, but there’s definitely something about the
production, and it’s different to what their previous
albums sounded like. Compare it Kid A or OK Computer, where
everything just sounds natural and together.

At first I just thought this was Radiohead going for a
different sound, but then I thought about The Information by
Beck, also produced by Godrich. That has the same kind of
production as In Rainbows, with the strong colours and
emphasis on loud sounds standing out. And again, compare it
to Godrich’s production of Sea Change or Mutations, albums
with a totally different style of production and sound.

Can anyone else see what I’m crapping on about? Is Godrich
more responsible for Radiohead’s new sound than the band
themselves? Is he even,.. maybe.. losing it?
or am i full of shit? :)

i dont know any of beck's work really, but i can comment on
radioheads. i def understand what you are saying and i think
its a little of both. it sounds like radiohead stripped
these songs down to the bone and kept them all quite
minimal, so i think you are hearing a much more defined
separation in sounds because there is less there. they
seemed to have focus more on the melodies and structure this
time around rather than adding layer upon layer of grandoise
noise and crescendos, leaving the room for nigel to make it
all sound very crispy clean.

godrich's production has always sounded really plasticky to
me, especially on headphones. too many lasers.

my only complaint about his production (other than recent
stuff), would be his love of reverb. though, none of it
really bothered. some of the recent use of reverb is
disgusting though.

yeah, i remember seeing pictures on dead air space of them
feeding speakers down a well for some reverb, and i was
happy to see them experimenting with sound.
though.. with the reverb on the finished album.. sometimes
its just too much..

He had them sleeping on caravan floors, a well known
producer's trick.

godrich deals radiohead crack to ease them a smile, plus hes
a ruddy good producer.. i get the feeling radiohead
production is split godrich, (j) greenwood then yorke

hehe yeah. i forget who else they went to, but they started
with godrich (i think), then went off to another guy or two,
weren't happy and went back to godrich for majority of the
recording/mixing.

no, they started with mark 'spike' tent. didn't work out,
returned to goodrich. that's all.
