I've fallen into a bad habit of trying to make my own music and getting bogged down in the mixing effects etc. I have a ton of unfinished tracks that i would like to complete, but once i start working on them again i hear all of the things that frustrated me about them and just try to start over from scratch and end up with something different and equally f*cked up on its own. The effects are all over the place, its just a muddled mess.
then there are the pluggins that i start messing around with. i can spend hours tweaking the sounds from the vsti softsynths and lose focus.
i was just curious about how you guys work, like your work flow and studio set up. if there are any resources for mixing/mastering that you'd suggest checking out...
Right now i have sequencers and audio editors pretty much computer only no external input (renoise, ableton 5 (i know they're up to 7 or will be soon), fruity loops 5, adobe audition 2). although i would like to get a mixer and audio interface & studio monitors for my computers. any suggestions/studio pics would be great.

I think it's better to make tunes with another person, that way you're sort of under pressure to produce something, but at the same time there's quality control as well. You have to find someone with similar tastes though, obviously.

thats one of the problems where i live. i've only met 2 people that knew of lets say Aphex Twin. One of them thinking Richard was a full 5 member metal band, and the other person was into his music, but wasn't interested in producing music or even having a clue how to or wanting to. And the majority of people around here consider anything i listen to as techno.
it probably wouldn't hurt to get out more though i reckon

I sit down and write music, but my music isn't effects driven.

I need to quit pretty much all pointless memetically replicated behavior that is easy and just focus on programming/algorithms. The vast majority of music making behavior nowadays is a time wasting mind disease like religion.

I don't know, but reading this is hilarious and the closest I've come to actually having a girlfriend. Actually that picture on the top left is the first time I've even seen a girl.

" So, Margret and I were having an argument (you'd think I'd have a shortcut key for that sentence by now, wouldn't you?). I can't remember what we were arguing about, but that doesn't matter here because in today's lesson we're focusing on style, not content. Say we were arguing about, oh, lettuce (even if we weren't, it's surely only a matter of time):
Margret: You haven't washed all the lettuce. Mil: I've washed the bits I'm going to eat. Margret: And left the rest for me to wash. Mil: If you wash it all, it goes off quicker. Margret: So, we'll eat it quicker, then. Mil: I don't want to eat it quicker. Margret: But I do. Mil: Then wash it yourself if you're so bloody desperate to gorge on lettuce. What am I? Your official Lettuce Washer?
Margret: My last boyfriend was taller than you. Etc. Fairly standard stuff, clearly, but what you need to realise is something that I can't get across on the page. It's that, as the exchanges switched backwards and forwards between us, there was a kind of bidding war going on with the pitch. It's not just that each one of us upped the volume a little for our turn, but that we also changed the tone by raising our voices so that our reply was about a fifth higher than the one that the other person had just used. It was like two Mariah Careys facing off - pretty quickly, we were having an argument that only dogs could hear.
I've noticed that this often happens, and I reckon Margret secretly initiates it as a ploy. She raises her pitch, subconsciously luring me to respond. It's tactical. She knows it increases her chances of winning the argument because - when I come to deliver the final, logical coup de grace with great imperiousness and gravitas - I discover I'm doing so in the voice of Jimmy Somerville.

hahaha, there're so many comedic gems nestled within that webpage.
" Salesgit: 'Excuse me. Have you had an accident within the last three years?'
Me: 'No. I always look like this.'
I mean, it's basically someone coming up to you and saying, 'Hi - you appear to be the result of some terrible catastrophe,' isn't it? Maybe I should reassess my haircut or something.
