Fox News are reporting it in America too.

This is another one of those white christian supremacy vs.
muslim savagery. Sickening how covertly racist the media is
really.

I don't know if that's true, the Sky news page linked at the
top of this thread says

"A school teacher from Liverpool is facing 40 lashes in
Sudan after insulting Islam's prophet by letting children
name a teddy bear Mohammed.

reported there as fact, she Insulted Islam's Prophet, no
questions asked, no quotation marks, ..she insulted Islam's
prophet. Apparently. Or let some kids name a teddy bear that
set off some highly politicised elements that may or may not
like Brits teaching at the school.

"The last officially recorded lynching in the United States
occurred in 1968, though many consider the 1998 death of
James Byrd in Jasper Texas, at the hands of three whites who
hauled him behind their pick-up truck with a chain, a later
instance."

Because of your "fatwawawawawa" comment. You're acting as if
you belong to an enlightened society and feel quite morally
justified in casting your condescension upon Islam. It's a
reminder that your own country is hardly a bastion of
liberalist thought.

i said "your country," just like you referred to my "own

and it wasn't his "ancestral home" -- he lived there and was
booted out in 1948, making him a refugee (courtesy of

900 years is pretty ancient, I would say. Also, Britain
isn't "my" country--most of my family weren't in it in the
1940s & I feel no great attachment to it or its inhabitants.

Can I just note how moral relativism doesn't imply
that you can't criticise anything? That it is indeed the
very basis of moral and normative behaviour (behaviour
directed at the future, or, rather, the "is-not") in the
first place?

Of course, this opens up the whole field of "how to
criticise," which would, basically, amount to the same kind
of conflict between different moral outlooks that the
original position is based on, and one would be loathe to
claim that the majority should hold powers of definition, as
well as that the minority should, so it's not an easy
question to answer, but still... criticism is one of the
basic components of morality, whether it's relative or
absolute.

Merry Christmas!

About your family, that's exactly the reason I would never
normally have brought this up -- nation-states are so
passé. But you were the one who reminded me that my "own
country is hardly a bastion of
liberalist thought." Of course, neither is yours, and in my
eyes, that's hardly either of our faults.

If you think that woman deserves what's coming to her, well
that's fine, go ahead and think so. I disagree and it
doesn't mean I look down on moslems or Islam (anymore than I
do the presbyterian church my maternal grandparents are
members of, anyway).

Yes, we're all guilty of presumptuousness at times, as we're
all guilty of being hypocrites, it's true.

My point was never whether I personally agreed with the
punishment due to be meted out on this woman--I don't agree
with corporal punishment, and, in regards to punishment in
general, I believe in rehabilitation over lengthy
incarceration.

This woman did, however, go to another country and not
bother to respect the major religious faith of that
country--for that, she should receive no sympathy, and the
newspapers should not use this as yet another excuse to
scream their borderline racist headlines.

I'm a bit tired of seeing the Islamic nations demonised so
often, as if the West had somehow been given the keys to
heaven and free licence to shit on those countries viewed as
being barbaric, backwards, medieval etc. The West should not
forget that its very recent past is littered with similar
intolerances, and that it was from within that change
happened. The West seems overly anxious to impose its
template, and to me, that's contemptible and probably for
morally corrupt purposes.

I'm not directing that last paragraph at you as an
accusation--more of a part-explanation of why I might get
emotionally involved in the subject and thus lose some of my
lucidity, lapsing into, as you noted, some presumption, for
which I apologise.

I don't think we know anything about how much the woman in
question did or did not know about the religious customs of
the country or of Islam in general. Are Teddy Bears part of
the religious faith of the locals? Maybe she didn't even
think of the Prophet, but rather any of the numerous
Muhammeds in the class. You know, it's easier for kids to
see themselves, to identify with, the teddy bear if it's
called something generic, something like themselves. In
England the Bear would have been called John or Joe or
something. How offensive is that?

Or then she did this as a conscious insult to Islam. We
don't know. But I don't think we should take anybody's word
for it, certainly not the presses', nor the embassy's, nor
the local authorities'
