so my pc died and i got a macbook pro + logic [back to the
roots] but didnt realize i had gotten the model with the
5400rpm drive. does ANYONE know if the 5400 is sufficient
enough drive to run the show? [i will be getting a 7200rpm
drive to record to/for audio]

i havent opened it yet [have 12 days left] and am trying to
find out if i need to return and upgrade to the 7200.

thanks in advance

if youre getting a 7200 rpm drive, why not just get a 2.5
inch sata and throw that in the mbp instead? then you can
buy an enclosure and use the 5400 as an external.

thats what i did. my 160 gig hard drive just died but was
still under warranty, but wanted a bigger hdd so i bought a
250 gig and put it in my macbook.

also, its a great time to buy hard drives because the 300
and 400 gig models have just been released, pushing the
prices of everything below them down.

because changing the internal drive on a MacBook Pro will
void the warranty. the MacBook is still covered by warranty
if you change the hard drive because it doesn't involve
completely taking the MacBook apart.

the MacBook Pro is a very different story though

If I were you I would return the MacBook Pro quick-sharpish
and get the hard drive configuration upgraded. If you can
afford it, go for the top-spec 250GB 7200rpm drive, but if
not, go for the 160GB 7200rpm one.

It all really depends on if you're going to be doing lots of
audio recording. if not, then I guess the 5400rpm drive
would do. if you're going to be using lots of samples, i
would suggest putting the money into upgrading the RAM.

but then again, if you're going to be doing live stuff, i
would suggest getting the biggest capacity RAM and fastest
drive you can, as you don't wanna be spending ten years
loading your samples into RAM while you're live

also i would suggest consulting someone who knows what
they're talking about :p

ive heard of some people taking out the disc drive and
putting in 2 7200rpm drives under a RAID configuration.

well now that's just silly. why would they make it so the
pro version is less upgradable?

Because the saintly Steve Jobs told them to. It's a feature
anyway.
Notice how they don't even mention the word computer in
their company name anymore?
I always like the phrase "fruit obsessed electronic toy
manufacturer" anyway.

trust me - you cannot easily access the hard drive in the
MacBook Pro

to do so requires taking out a ridiculous amount of screws,
removing very small ribbon cables, and it will void your
warranty

Fuck the warranty...I tried to get mine fixed under warranty
and apparently they refuse to honour it unless you PAID for
the MacBook Pro. What kind of bullshit is that.

I went straight down to the Apple store and took another one
to replace it, and so far so good, although I am thinking
about phoning to complain about the mark the security tab
left on the casing.

i wasnt questioning you, i believe you. it just seems quite
silly considering the hdd on a regular old macbook is a real
piece of cake to remove.

thanks for the suggestions. but at that kinda buckage...im
not about to start soldering in my new machine. i guess il
return it and order it online. the shops dont carry the
7200rpm verion in stock apparently. the ONE detail the
shoppie didnt happen to mention.

again thanks for your responses.
