as discussed.

(or, well, the part where i reply to my own posts for a
while and then wander off to record music)

it's alright *and* could probably use some basic mixing.

If future Ae recordings are a bit self conscious it's my
fault.

Sorry

I like it, especially the fuzzy, demented cymbals driving
the percussion, albiet from the background. I concur with
big, there's a slight mixing issue, apparent at 0:50 in
track 1. That synth is just a bit too phat, too loud there.
But it's cool. You've already said your piece on why it's
difficult for you to edit your jams in post, but I swear to
god your tracks would go to the next level if you found a
way, I'm 100% sure of this.

now gimme a note or two on this one I'm working on for the past few
days?

yeah. there's a lot going on in the bass that i can hear on
cans but gets lost on earbuds.

honestly, i think it's me fucking around with it after the
fact, didn't get the EQ + multiband comp correct. that i can
fix. in fact i'm pretty sure i just didn't get that right;
i'm trying to do stuff i don't understand. so i might go
back and undo some of it

...no comments on the cover art?

i whispered some words into an AI's ear, and... it looks
like sean booth and rob brown merged into one person, with a
dash of the guy from portishead? with a pie being thrown
through one ear and out the other? i've no idea where it got
that -- the query was something like "autechre / balrog"

every subsequent attempt essentially failed. renders the
text instead of generating an image; if you mess with that
stuff, you've seen it. which is curious given, how
thoroughly it nailed it the first time -- oh well, perhaps
their AWS budget was thin... then, since they want money for
resolution, i used a separate AI service to upscale the
image to the resolution bandcramp requires. i may go back
and annotate it a bit. but this has proved a reliable
process for album covers. garfield at a warehouse rave,
please

the pie exiting the ear looks like... a) certain stripes of
abstract art b) stuff you see on acid c) something these AI
image things seem to do... quite a bit...

album covers, AI, further comment ~ LAZY_TITLE

yes, oh, this works: it's elon musk, half borg face, smoking
a mushroom pipe, but it's just his head, in a space helmet,
blasting off. the first image it gave me was good enough
that i figured i had it, but i've learned to always try
again, and the second one just killed it.

i need to sort out doing this on desktop rather than relying
on crackpot websites.

note or two for wolfslice:

intro: if you're going to do a BOC, you can't just leave
your tape motor farting on an lfo, you should just do that
by hand. also, your beats should crunch. these don't crunch.
mostly, though, i want some human hands on that, rather than
a fixed LFO. and you need more crunch if you want to B OC.
if you want to be plaid it needs to be thinner and more
wispy

but no, by the time it's past that, 30 or 40 seconds in,
just banging on some textures and drums, this is nice

The art on this one is neat, though the amalgum doesn't
actually look like sean mixed with rob. It looks like a
fucked up Van Gough.
I said some of these you've been using were coming off like
a bad AI approximation of "fear and loathing style" but I
guess what I meant was very speficially this guy
Ralph Steadmen (1, 2 )

That elon one is a good example in that sorta style, tho it
is cool.

Each case is specific but overall I'm getting tired of AI
art already. I soured on it pretty much overnight. It's way
cool for like fractals, but it does lack an intangible
essence that I find hard to describe.

And thanks for the listen, I appreciate the qualtiy of your
ear. BoC or Plaid honestly didn't occur to me as inspiration
(and tbh BoC is probably always there a bit), but Tipper and
Proem often do.

I guess the one constant in my tunes is that I simply like
cleaner, hip hoppy drums right at the forefront, driving the
whole thing-- when I hear it done well in other music, my
ears perk right the fuck up. No excuses for that, but it
very possibly could sound basic as fuck at my skill level.
I'll mess around with crunching them up a bit to see how it
plays.

This note tho, I'm having trouble parsing: "you can't just
leave your tape motor farting on an lfo, you should just do
that by hand." I've got drawn in lines for resonators,
reverb, and what amounts to a VERY mild tape hiss. Also some
FM8 morphy knobs done by hand . There ARE some LFOs doing a
bit with the freq filters with this layer ( 15 seconds,
is that what you meant? It's pretty subtle in the track.

but perhaps its the source sample, slightly mangled and
played as the lead in (not super attached to this)-- which
is just a single bar sampled from the soundtrack for a game
called This War of Mine. I was pissed they played that sound
so little in the tune, so I decided to make a track out of
it.

This War Of Mine Soundtrack: Alone (timestamped to the sound)

Either way, back to your tracks in your thread. Track 2
now:

Seesaws and dirty crashes. Like when the acid bass really
gets going at 0:40. Mechanical freakout starting at 1:30 is
the best element of the track, have no clue how you built
that. Sorta just sounds like a machinery sample.

See now one great use of AI in art would be to just separate
all the layers of your track and present them to me as
isolated .wavs. (I know the tech for that is kinda here
already) If I had that, I'd steal that sweet sweet machine
sound and mangle it into some stripped down hip hop.
Probably sound straight up autechrey.

then i just recorded another track and added it to the

so, like, re: the behringer messinger (ms-101 clone with
cloned mods)

had a real sh-101 for years. sold it because i needed the
money and it was starting to get, like, terrifyingly
valuable. for someone who spills coffee on things sometimes

all the moves came back to me immediately. like, shifting
the rhythm by mashing up the attack/decay a bit and
sculpting out the tail with s/r. essentially subconscious
motions involving cutoff, res, env. with sculpting
envelopes

but it's over a year now, and i have a feel for all the
mods, the FM stuff in particular. but also how to abuse a
level of midi integration i never had. i tended to just
stick to the internal sequencer or just basic cv/gate.

i used to joke i was one of the top 100 sh-101 players in
massachusetts. with the joke being, try even finding 100
people who describe themselves here as such; so i'm
assuredly on the right side of the math, here

so, 1:30 in that last one, it's like... yes, that just
explodes into... bendy and wispy... maybe i'm even to the
point where you'd recognize me on an sh-101 over someone
else. but every happy with that in any case

that, stressing out about work and money, but should i have
the means to continue... damn, give me a year, i will just
be massacring it with the behringer cloned 303 with cloned
mods

and it matches the panning, i guess -- ms-1 and 303 with
left hand, playing that square wave pad manually whole way
on microfreak with right. find some time for the mixer here
and there :)

i'm deeply off my own topic, but, somewhere on the shulgin
scale many years ago, i am having this revelation: that the
sh-101 is an Instrument, capital-i. it's more than just a
synth than can meld into the network... that i wouldn't go
so far as to call it consciousness or anything grand, but it
just is very much its own thing. these parts, those
controls, that sound. it's all very integrated with itself;
what it is.

that, getting the ms-1, i was complaining the FM knob...
muscle memory still there; bumping into it by accident going
for the filter controls. now i find myself wondering if they
actually knew what they were doing.

the behringer clone w/ clones 303, separate decay controls
accented and UNaccented notes, balrog track i just found
myself using that to turn the filters inside out to shift
the rhythm like on the sh101 -- just thinking, like, oh this
will probably work -- and it did.

that it's actually not very forgiving with the sweet spots,
oh. you have to massively jump the resonance knob behind the
scenes without anyone knowing to get the two parts to sound
equal and...

...it makes sense, given its reputation. that a 303 is
another capital-I instrument, and with this level of midi
integration, all the mods, separate decay... yeah, give me a
year

so i guess the joke is: i play keys, bass guitar, drums,
sh101, i'm learning 303, i tried violin but i'm hopeless,
maybe i could be good at guitar but i fucking hate it, also
sometimes i try to turn a whole salad of equipment into a
giant custom instrument and it's always collapsing, but i
get a track out of it sometimes. oh i can also play conga
drum

it's all very integrated with itself; what it is.

i would define consciousness as the serpentine belt in a
car. delivering power to needed subsystems on demand. but
that's a dry, functional definition. if i had to put
consciousness into an action-items, "it's very much what it
is" would be a good primary

what is the 303? lots of argument. but there's no debate the
303 is deeply, utterly, thoroughly the 303.

"lots of argument"

that i recall reading some usenet thred, and the one that
won for me, i think the guy's name was robin, he argued that
the 303 sounded like "a rodent in distress"

i may have been blinded by all my word alarms going off on
this being an epic phrase... but yeah, yeah, the yow yOw YOW
YELL YELL scream etc

that, as much as it pains me to let go of that phrase, it's
really about something something accent 3-pole 12db you're
out of your element donnie

that yes, the reason this incinerates clothing on the
dancefloor is because it lands on frequencies we are
genetically primed to react to.

like trypophobia. my reaction was: ew, gross!
but, kind of like licking a 9-volt, at some point i came
back and kept looking at it. mostly just trying to study it.
after a few minutes, i literally became physically nauseous
and had to stop. there was absolutely nothing psychological
about it. that is just fucking programmed in there
somewhere; it's firmware

i posted a bunch about soundclot, how i was starting to turn
it into a messy file dump, and that's not what it's for;
they'll catch me eventually

so then i'm talking about a reasonable approach to this,
which is come back and do quality control at regular
intervals; push it all into an album and make the less
interesting tracks bonus tracks.

somewhere in between, i was confused by a thread where you
were freaking out on me.

now it's, "what happened to the track you posted, the noises
were good and i want to lift it for my own stuff" and, like
i said: read what i wrote
