thread motivation ~ that i find myself of an opinion that... no, this is not the vast majority of people, but i do feel that it's not just me, to the point where it's worth saying out loud, maybe -- and i effectively wish to reality check this by running it by some other people thread content ~ it was the peak of the 2020 pandemic, the donald causing the worst stock market crash in history, and i, along with many others, were quite into "watching things." that i blew through the first season of westworld; the first two of star trek discovery. then i got some notice from my ISP warning me that i was torrenting stuff and threaten threaten etc. and so i thought: "i'll get back to these once i get a VPN to avoid this horseshit" and, well, i never did. since then, everything has balkanized -- this or that is locked up in disney+ or whatever impossibly confusing tiers AT&T, no that's only on netflix. so now, people that actually didn't pirate stuff are also saying "i guess i'll get back to this later" and there's this thing known as "buzz" -- like, people talking about a show, and that gets more people to watch a show, and that's what makes tentpole series like westworld. the people who pirate shit often have it all first, and they're the ones talking about it and building buzz that gets the people who don't have the marbles to pirate, to buy it, and, well, this does not work for small indie things, but for something HBO-tentpole scale, fuckers done right shot themselves in the foot because i'm not sure if anything can ever get big as game of thrones did ever again. you can't pirate it, it's streaming service one of twelve, people only have the cash for one or two, then others like me don't see any value in a streaming subscription. most people will file into marvel comic book movies like sheep and pay for disney+ even though they pulled the stevie wonder episode of sesame street, but suspect others have tapped out |

i guess i also think of back when people got in Deep Legal Shit for w4r3z and Adobe is like "photoshop costs $600 and you distributed a million copies you caused $600 million in damages" but then 9/10 of the people pirating photoshop were 14yo kids with $112 to their name and you think they'd just save up and buy photoshop if they can't pirate it? no, they'll just use MS Paint and be totally happy with that because photoshop is some walled off thing they can't touch and no one knows what they're missing. so, like, i haven't looked, but i have a strong hunch that... the balkanization of streaming, increasingly aggressive policing of torrenting during lockdown... all this will very closely match the declining viewship numbers of westworld. |

that, actually, it was st:discovery that got me a robo-violation letter, and that was (is? [who gives a rat fart]) exclusive to... CBS something streaming something? and then i think literally same week, i love the movie baby driver so much i bought the dvd and the cd soundtrack despite having a nice clean 1080p pirated copy. that i'm never going to be some nut that buys a novelty game of thrones throne, but there is a reasonable buck if you stop guarding everything like an anemic starved rat clinging to a quarter of a peanut |

never was affected by the buzz cause im not huge into socialization and i basically work on the road. i´ve managed to not get spoiled the end of GOT for years until i got a hand on it. there are always rather safe ways to get anything you want. torrents dont belong into that category any more unless they re niche. the balkanization as you call it surely has its pros and cons. those services battle hard for the market, thus producing fucking expensive shows some with high quality too. obviously half the population cant afford all of those. but there is always ways, so i rather see the benefits of it. another thing is, local laws kind of make it hardly worth to simply pursue everybody. its not as easy as a traffic ticket. the main targets of the police are site admins making millions with ads/hosting and for specialized law firms its uploaders, preferrably with bonity check, so theyll get their money quick and without any hassle. so the vast majority of illegal consumers stays untouched. |

numerous good points to unpack here never was affected by the buzz cause im not huge into socialization and i basically work on the road. i started off saying, "i'm not really the average case here, BUT i feel that not only not alone, but i am onto a general trend that actually ~is~ bleeding into john. j. average case i´ve managed to not get spoiled the end of GOT for years until i got a hand on it. i read the first two and a half books on summer break from college, and, oh, do i want to start over with those confusing-ass books, or with the TV version, and... weird as it may sound, i've never seen any GOT at all just because i still just can't handle... how to handle... how i should figure out handling... AUGH there are always rather safe ways to get anything you want. and then we get back into my lede for the westworld, st:discovery copyright trolls: i could still pirate this, absolutely. in fact, like i said, i kind of just stuck a pin in it, like, "do that later" but then i didn't wind up doing that, simply because i had other things to do and kind of just... forgot about it? so this "streaming exclusive" crap is essentially the apple of eris. |

well, yes, john j. average surely feels the pressure to keep up with the latest. it goes so far that my under 11 yo nephews are allowed to watch the squid game by their parents because all of school watches it. apparently it has arrived at kindergartens too. the cultural impact of "must see tv" is bigger even than the financial issue imo, cause i know quite a few people who switch and cancel trial subscriptions like clothes to keep up and dont actually pay for more than one service at a time. or share subscription like i do with netflix. so there is even legal ways around it. im glad we kind of watch what we want and not what we feel has to be watched. furthermore that you have other things in life. actively creating your life and free time is undervalued. |

kids are watching way more influncers on youtube than actual tv i think. their eyes are glued to the phone like alex in clockwork orange. my niece is watching things on her phone everywhere she is. e v e r y w h e r e and in the bed during the night. they have wrinkles under their eyes like they work 12 hour shifts. she could be einstein if only she watched something useful, instead of some assholes marketing a video game when she is not playing any videogames at all. this is going to be some fucked up generation and i hope they´re gonna be able to manage this new world. i know my media consumation is out of hands at times already. |

did you like season 1 and 2 of STD? I only watched redlettermedia shit all over it. I gave Star Trek Picard a shot, but it was the worst thing I'd ever seen and it made me so embarassed that i literally tore down my star trek tng poster from the bedroom (this is a true story) |

std: nah, i was giving it a chance, after initially being put off, as being another take and kept watching into season 2. i enjoyed the latest movies, since they were a fast paced mix of action and classic star trek, which i dont know why, worked. but STD wasnt for me. too military. hardly any science and sci-fi aspect, and well you know, the klingons... using worfs words: "we dont talk about it" havent dared watching picard yet ^^ |

thinking about it, i remember wondering why they used the star trek franchise for this show. it could have been an above par sci fi series, but it hardly bares any resemblance with the star trek universe of the previous 703 episodes, nor their style of story telling. however im ok with it being out there. like id have people try something new than not doing it at all. with picard thats a bit different, cause im a bit afraid hes not portraying the man i used to see in TNG and it might be a bit hard to ignore afterwards, but i guess i will watch it eventually. |

so disney read my ranting and brought back bob iger ~ ~ but maybe it was because someone else read my ranting and wrote an article on cocking up time-warner, HBO, westworld, etc. and the common theme is all these idiots are desperate for numbers; pour billions into exclusive content. people being rational, they subscribe to each streaming service in turn for a month and then click a single button to cancel it; see you in six months when you've blown another 2 billion dollars it's almost like it would be a better business model to just license content in fact, case in point ~ an article about how to watch, like, probably one of the most decent new movie... things... out and about now. and it's an article trying to help people who are confused: can i watch this on netflix, or... ? |

ST:D is just fun. the way mudd comes back with a time crystal... just, like, yeah, let's just have as much fun as we can with this formula! and it is indeed a blast. the constant cheeky references to mushrooms and conformal symmetry; the tardigrade then, i dunno, Sonequa Martin-Green, she blows my mind. i'm not the sort that usually, like... notices acting? but, just the the stuff she does with little twitches in her face. it's just this massive firehose of bandwidth; she speaks entire paragraphs without saying a word. and again, i usually don't notice acting like that. |
