ok, shit, i think i see his plan for twitter now "blue checks for $20, they should be $2" -- what he wants is to facebook-ize it, where it's Your Real Name and the fee is trivial for the blue check so they can force everyone to get one or be spam-filtered and... A) $2 per user over twitter userbase willing to put up with it could indeed be profit B) it will solve the bot problem he's been complaining about that continuing on B) he's spoken of it being a town square, and, yeah, he wants Your Real Name, trivial fee to keep people from making random accounts that what i was on twitter for was stuff like "shit my dad says" and shit his dad says be like "it's not your backyard. it's the dog's backyard. do you poop on the back yard? no. if you poop on something, you own it." and now part of my move-in routine is forever: poop in the place. now i own it but separation of concerns, i don't think this sort of silliness can co-exist with the all-verified town square concept, because people can't create stupid anonymous accounts to mock PHP bros or whatever. i guess all that shit is supposed to go to tiktok and telegram and bleh. i've held off on bothering but i now have a few sources of burner numbers and if donald trump is going back to twitter, perhaps i should too |

that's exactly the point twitter was -- is, still, on some levels -- a website designed as a bad compulsion. but then jan 6 and it's become a sort of town square, that i am willing to grant this. then, though, like i said, separation of concerns -- it cannot be both a town square and a bad compulsion, shit-my-dad-says site. the $2 is not for the bad compulsion privilege, because, if this goes how i suspect, that's increasingly less what the platform will be for. instead the $2 is a maintenance fee that is there mostly to prove you are a single, real person. blue checks kind of like a backstage pass now, he wants to turn it into the stamp on your hand you get at the door. that, really, i am sad to see twitter turn into some town hall, but it's where we've landed and it may actually be a decent choice. but then implementing this is a nightmare Sisyphean clusterfuck of sub-choices and yeah, i do worry about how it'll pan out |
