It’s come to my attention that mermaidman sadly passed away on 14/03/21. His wife got in touch with me after going through his things and finding some of his old xltronic memorabilia. I was the seventh person on his list of best friends but the first one to reply. She has sent me the following in an email: “His name was Gary and he was 54. The death date is approximate, it was estimated he had been dead three weeks when our son found him. He had gone round to borrow money, I’ve been staying with a friend for a few years, and he found him. It was sexual misadventure, as they politely put it. There was a bit of a to do about how long it took him to be found, his work just assumed he’d gone on another mental health sabbatical. They sent a card but everyone called him ‘Darren’ in it. Tells you how much he’ll be missed. I didn’t bother going to the funeral, I’d spent three days cleaning out the house, throwing away all our old stuff. Our daughter went, said turnout was “modest”. Honestly expected a bunch of you to be there, the way he used to spend all his time here. He’d be sat with the laptop on his gut while I watched tv, muttering “got the faggot” under his breath or sighing. I never saw him as happy as when he was talking to you lot. It’s funny how the persona he put on was probably who he really was inside. I’m happy he found a community in which he could be himself, it was tough for him, being gay and never coming to terms with it. Everyone knew but him you know? It’s good that websites like that exist for unhappy people to be themselves. We married when I was 17 (he was 32). I remember thinking he was so cool, it took me far too long to realise I was a last pathetic attempt at normality. It’s sad really, all that repression was what made him so boring, so empty.
