hehehe, yes hold on for the boundaries will soon disappear,
and you can do nothing but accept it.

I would say more melodic for me...

I can apreciate a good melody without percussions (I believe
this is what you meant), but a song with alot of percussion
and no melody is not really my ideal...

To me, percussion is like the graphics in a videogame and
the melody is like the fun factor. graphics arn't
everything its how the game plays and if you have fun.

All this 'yeah the beat is just so wicked'... is kinda
pointless. it irritates me after awhile. we have this
radiostation called The Beat...and its just so lame!
There's more to music than 'the beat'.

Melody is FAR more important that beats as far as im
concerned.

ratio is about (music / beat) 65:45

i just can't differentiate their worth. sure melody is
important, but think of a song with a melody you love and
take the percussion away and how much do you love the song
now? and vice versa of course.

Frank Zappa said that writing about music is like dancing
about architecture. I say, that would be some kinda dancing!

I still want to see some modern dance troupe choreograph
something to rpeg off ep7.

The floors are melting, are melting, the horizons are like
buttah.

Somehow I like the idea that much smarter people than me,
like Hofstadter, can write articles that meaningfully
compare Bach counterpoint to chinese calligraphy, fractals,
binary code and Escher tesselations. Me, I'm too toopid.

I like that! But then what's the soundtrack? :-)

my dad has it, but i could never be bothered to read that
book. it's a fascinating concept and all, but i already
know that everything is infinitely interconnected to
everything and so of course there will be overlap between
escher and bach and whoever that mathmatician is. it's like
what max's math guru (from the film pi) said about 213
"pretty soon you'll find it everwhere." infinite
interconnectedness. i appreciate that folks like hofstadter
are getting into the thick of it, but i can't go that route.

fleetmouse: yeah i study music.

it doesnt kill anything to analyze music. if anything, i
enjoy it more.

but its not for everyone, and I can see why it would bother
them. but hey, whatever makes people happy. if someones joy
is to just listen, so be it. if its someones joy to analyze
it all, who am I, or anyone, to say that he is wrong, and
shouldnt do it/enjoy it.

however, one thing that bothers me, is when people listen to
music and tell me the chords and scale the melody is played
on etc.

maybe because i cant do it... but mainly i just find it
fucking annoying, cause they arnt listening to the emotion,
they are listening to theory.

i always listen subjectivly, but when i want to, i become
objective and observant.

Is it alright for a composer to not be able to play
anything? Say you did lots of great works but couldn't play
for your life, is that allowed in music?

sorry, i couldn't point out anything specific, it just seems
to fit. of course this is based off of my limited exposure
to your textual self.

if you would have said you were a total freeform guitarist
who likes to solo i might have been confused.

his room, write electronic music. (and various other
kinds... but electronic is closest to my heart)

It's a neat book! When I first got it I spent weeks working
through his little proof-of-concept logical exercises and
trying to wrap my head around Godel's incompleteness theorem
etc. Eventually though it got to be too much and I just
skipped to the good parts like the Zen koans and shit.
